Laff, legal name Laff Media, LLC, is an American digital multicast television network that is owned by Katz Broadcasting, a subsidiary of E. W. Scripps Company. The network specializes in comedy programming, featuring a mix of feature films and archived sitcoms. Laff is targeted at adults between the ages of 18 and 49 years old.[2]

Originally, Katz sold the network to affiliated TV stations via ad split but by October 2015 had moved to a carriage fees in exchange for the network get the ad inventory due to greater inventory with stations adding a third or fourth subchannel.[3]1 Laff used direct response advertising as a meter of viewers before switching to Nielsen rating C-3 in late 2015.[3]3

Eugh. I don't like... Guys get scared of stuff, man. We get scared of things. I get scared of things sometimes, you know? It was probably like six or seven months ago and I'm at my house and I'm on the second level of the house. My girl's laying next to me asleep. It's like 3:00 in the morning and I hear something downstairs on the front door. I hear, "chka chka chka chka chka." Chka chka chka. I heard the door handle, so the first thing I did is I just pretended I didn't hear anything, right? I was like, "Nothin'. It's not here." Right? And then I was just hoping it was some friendly burglars, like they were like, "Oh, shoot, this dude locked his door. Let's just go to the next house." Then I heard it again, like "chka chka." I said, "Babe." I said, "Babe, wake up." I said, "Wake up! Wake up!" I said, "Wake up." She was like, "What?" I said, "Dial 9-1-1 on your phone and get ready to hit 'send.' I'm gonna go downstairs and check it out." She said, "What are you talking about?" I said, "Dial 9-1-1 on your phone!" And she said, "I heard you." I said, "Why you keep makin' me repeat myself?" She said, "You make me repeat myself when I ask you stuff." I said, "Really? Are we -- Are we gonna fight right now while somebody's breaking in?" She said, "I can't believe you're doin' this [bleep]," right? And in her defense, I smoke weed before I go to sleep at night, and for the last few nights I had been hearing something come through the wall, I thought. Right? She was like, "Nobody's comin' through the wall!" I swore I heard somebody with a number-2 pencil drawing their outline. She's like, "Nobody's drawing their outline and then sawing their outline out through the wall, comin' through like, 'Give me all your shit,'" right? But I had some good stuff. That's what I heard. That's what I thought I heard. My friend was like, "Yo, who wakes their girl up when they hear a noise?" I was like, "Me. Me. I wake up her up." I said, "Women are equal, right? Well, then help me." I ain't dyin'. I hate when I watch a movie and there's just some woman hiding in the closet and the guy is, you know what I mean, fighting -- Get out the closet and help! What are you doin'? I don't that's -- That's not fair. If I die, we die. We die together like Romeo and Juliet in my house. Matter fact, anybody in the closet 10 and up, get out the closet and help Daddy. Okay? I don't even have a 10-year-old, but if yours is visiting that day, for whatever reason, they're gonna either die or be a hero. That's all I'm sayin'. If somebody breaks in my house and they put a gun in my mouth and they're like, "What's the number to the safe?" I'm gonna be like, "She's in the closet. She has the other half of the combination. Baby, come on out the closet! He can see your feet! Come on out! Come on out!" It's not fair. They say it's always equal. It's not equal. Think about this. As a man, if you hear somebody breaking into your house, right, and your lady's asleep, you can go, "Babe, I hear a noise downstairs and I'ma go check it out" and she'll be like, "Okay, check it out." She'll go back to sleep. It could never work the other way around. She can never go to you and go, "Honey, I hear a noise downstairs. I'm gonna go check it out," and you're like, "All right. Check it out," and you just cover up. You're not even a man anymore. You lose your man points. You're not a man. My boy was like, "Man, all right with all that, man. You're clearly alive. Who was breaking in?" I was like -- I didn't even want to tell him. 'Cause here's what happened, right? We have two cats, right? No! Shut up, lady! Okay? Let me tell you what happened. We have two cats and I made soup that day and the spoon from the soup was still on the stove and the cats kept jumping on the stove and licking the spoon. They kept licking it and the spoon kept clicking off the stove like, "click, click, click," right, but when you're high and scared? It sounded like somebody was like, "click click click click click click click click" on the door. I swear on my life to this day she still doesn't know. When I went back upstairs, she was like, "Baby, what happened?" I said, "It's all good. As soon as I got down there, I heard a car peel off. Everything's good." She said, "Are you serious?" I said, "I'm dead serious. Come here, now. Lay down and relax. Relax. Now, about that blow job we've been talkin' about..." Yo, I'm Corey Rodrigues!

History

Laff's launch was announced by Katz Broadcasting in January 2015 as having a scheduled launch date of April 15, 2015, which coincides with Tax Day in the United States, when tax returns are due and, as Broadcasting & Cable writer Jon Lafayette noted in an article on Laff's launch, "people will need something to make them smile."[4]

Katz announced that television stations owned by ABC Owned Television Stations and 13 E. W. Scripps Company would serve as the network's charter affiliates; the former serving as a replacement for the standard definition feed of the Live Well Network, which with Laff's announcement also began to roll-back to only being carried by ABCOTS stations.[5][6] On March 13, 2015, Katz Broadcasting announced an affiliation deal with the Cox Media Group to carry Laff on the subchannels of seven of its stations expanding its initial reach to 47% of the country.[7] The following week on March 20, as part of a multi-network affiliation agreement with Katz, the Meredith Corporation announced that it would carry the network on two of its stations.[8][9]

On February 13, 2015, Laff acquired the syndication rights to five sitcoms.[10] Laff followed that deal with three for film licensing with Walt Disney Studios, Miramax, and Sony Pictures Television by March 17.[11] Laff made a multi-year deal for five sitcoms with Carsey-Werner Productions in April 2016.[12] Roseanne reruns were removed on May 29, 2018 following ABC's cancellation of the show's revival, both decisions were based on a Roseanne Barr tweet considered racist.[13]

Programming

Laff's comedy-centered programming consists of a mix of theatrically released feature films, as well as off-network sitcoms.[2] Laff would set itself apart from its multicast competitors by carrying more contemporary programming content, in contrast to the reruns of series from the 1980s and earlier commonly found on other over-the-air networks which rely on acquired content.[5] The network also provide additional content via the network's website and mobile app.[14]

Movies

Laff's program schedule will have access to approximately 250 titles and films from the libraries of three film studios by virtue of multi-year program licensing agreements with Walt Disney Studios, Miramax, Paramount Pictures, and Sony Pictures Entertainment (distributed by Sony Pictures Television).[11][15]

Television series

In addition to films, much of Laff's programming lineup consists of reruns of sitcoms spanning over 800 episodes.[11]
