History

The village was first mentioned in the 13th century as Upma(n)husum, and means "houses which are located stream upwards".[5] Oppenhuizen is a canal village which developed around 1000.[6]

The Dutch Reformed church was founded in 1695 by grietman (mayor/judge) D.G. Burmania, and was restored in 1834.[6] In 1817, a tower was added to the church.[7]

Oppenhuizen was home to 354 people in 1840.[4] Between 1866 and 1868 the road to Sneek was built, and Oppenhuizen started to grow along the road, and became attached to Uitwellingerga.[6] Before 2011, the village was part of the Wymbritseradiel municipality.[4]
