Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary (Hungarian: Károli Gáspár Református Egyetem) is a Christian university in Budapest, Hungary. The university has more than 8000 students. The university has five faculties and offer courses leading to degrees at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels.

History

The university is named after Gáspár Károli, the translator of the first Hungarian language Bible. According to Dávid Czvittinger, the first Hungarian liter- ary historian, Gáspár Károli, a pastor of the Reformed Church, Bible translator and church organiser, was “the most outstanding Hungarian philosopher, linguist and theologian of his time; and among his followers, the most brilliant preacher of the Word of God”.

The legal predecessor of the University was the Reformed Theological Academy of Budapest, founded in 1855 and granted University status by the Hungarian Parliament in 1900. In 1993 the General Assembly of the Hungarian Reformed Church took the decision to establish a multifaculty University, and this decision was approved later on in the year on 21st September by the Parliament of the Republic of Hungary. Through the creation of Károli Gáspár University, the Hungarian Reformed Church has fulfilled the aims of its forefathers. Károli Gáspár University, in the spirit of the universitas scientiarium, aims to raise the status of not solely the Church, but also the nation, through its educational, teaching and academic work.

Faculties

Károli Gáspár University comprises of the following 5 faculties:

• Faculty of Economics, Health Sciences and Social Studies • Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences • Faculty of Law • Faculty of Pedagogy • Faculty of Theology

Education and research activities are carried out by 15 institutes and 52 departments belong to the five faculties altogether.

International Relations

Károli Gáspár University is a dynamic institution with rapidly developing international relations. It is a strategic aim of Károli Gáspár University in Hungary to further deepen and widen its network of international cooperation.

Today, the university maintains bilateral contacts and cooperation agreements with close to 160 partner institutions in 37 countries in the World. Partners are mostly European institutions, though the institution has an increasing number of partnerships with universities in Japan, Korea, Canada and the USA. Cooperation agreements cover student and teacher exchange schemes, joint research and publication, as well as organising and providing courses for students.

Károli Gáspár University is ranked fourth out of 38 institutions of higher education in Hungary. Its Faculty of Law ranked first in the field of economic sciences. In the overall ranking, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences ranked fourth among the 148 higher education faculties in Hungary - and the second best faculty in the country in the field of humanities.
