Mohammad Ali Kamfirouzi (Persian: محمدعلی کامفیروزی; born September 16, 1983 in Shiraz) is an Iranian advocate[1] and civil rights activist[2] who was arrested by The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps during the Mahsa Amini protests.[3][4][5]

Life

Kamfirouzi was born in Shiraz and his father was killed in the Siege of Basra.[6] He graduated from Tehran University with a Master of Laws.[6]

As a student, Kamfirouzi was elected as a representative of the managers responsible for student publications in the central council overseeing the publications of the Ministry of Science.[7]

In September 2016, he gave a speech as a student representative in a meeting with Ali Khamenei.[8] In the text of his speech, Kamfirouzi pointed out the illegality of some actions of the leader of the Islamic Republic and the institutions under his command.[9]

Advocacy

Kamfirouzi has represented political civil rights cases, including journalists and students.[10][11][12] The case of Saeed Madani, Niloofar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi (detained journalists) and the case of students arrested in the Mahsa Amini protests are among his activities.[13][14][15]

Convictions and arrests

Kamfirouzi at Shiraz University addressed to Ali Khamenei

If the leadership (Khamenei) is not aware of the violation of citizens' rights, it is regrettable, and if they are aware, it is a hundred times more regrettable.

His speech at Shiraz University, in which he criticized the performance of the leadership, led to complaints from the security institutions.[16] In July 2019, he was sentenced by the Islamic Revolutionary Court to two years of suspended imprisonment and was made to present himself to the Intelligence Organization of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on the charge of "insulting the leadership", but the appeals court acquitted him.[17][18]

Kamfirouzi was arrested three months after the beginning of the nationwide Mahsa Amini protests, on December 15, 2022, when he went to Evin courthouse to pursue the case of one of his clients.[19] According to Kamfirouzi's lawyer, this arrest was made without legal formalities, and he didn't have the right to contact his family during the arrest period.[20] Kamfirouzi was released on bail on January 9, 2023.[21][22]
