Milad Zohrevand (Persian: میلاد زهره‌وند; 2002–2023) was an Iranian who was arrested in Malayer during the Mahsa Amini protests and executed on November 22, 2023.[1] He was an asphalt worker and his child was born while he was in detention.[2] According to the government-affiliated media, he was sentenced to death on the charge of murdering a member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps named "Ali Nazari" during the 40th mourning of Mahsa Amini.[3] Zahravand was executed on 23 November 2023 without prior notice; human rights organizations described Zohrevand's execution as having been conducted "secretly."[4][5]

Arrest

On 24 October 2022, the 40th mourning day of the death of Mahsa Amini, students attending Malayer University protested based on the call that had been announced in advance.[6][7] According to his relatives, Zahravand was not among the protesters, but on that day he was present at the place where a member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps named "Ali Nazari" was killed.[8][9] He was with several other members of his family near the premises of the 12 Malayer police station when a clash with the security forces took place. According to one of his relatives, "Milad was shot in the hand and was seriously injured. This IRGC member was also killed there."[10]

The Ansar al-Hussein Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Hamedan Province introduced Ali Nazari as a member of the intelligence-security staff of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Malayer.[11][12]

His death sentence was confirmed on 23 November 2023, the same day as his execution, by the Supreme Court of Iran.[13]

Execution

Zohrevand was executed on 23 November 2023 without prior notice in the central prison of Hamedan.[14][15][16] The German Foreign Ministry and Amnesty International condemned the execution.[17][18] After his execution, Zohrevand's body was denied burial in a Muslim cemetery, and at his funeral, authorities arrested his parents for breach of the peace.[7]
