En taxonomía, las Thermococcaceae son la única familia dentro de Thermococcales.[1]​ Casi todas las especies dentro de las tres géneros de Thermococcaceae fueron aislados de fuentes hidrotermales al fondo oceánico. Todas son estrictamente anaerobias.[2]​


Filogenía

La taxonomía aceptado se base en la List of Prokaryotic Names with Standing in Nomenclature (LPSN)[3]​ and Centro Nacional para la Información Biotecnológica (NCBI)[4]​ y la filogenía se base en 16S rRDN LTP versión 106 del 'All-Species Living Tree' Project.[5]​
