Yarrellton is an unincorporated community located in Milam County, Texas, United States.[1] According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 35 in 2000.

History

The first settlers came to Yarrellton from Alabama by wagon train in 1868; among them was American Civil War veteran J.C. Perkins. It was named Yarrellton for Tom Yarrell, who served as both a judge and a store owner and opened the first store here. In 1884, a Masonic lodge was established, followed by a WoodmenLife lodge. A post office was established at Yarrellton in 1886. In 1890, the community had 50 residents served by a corn mill, gin, and two general stores. A Missionary Baptist Church was established a couple of years later, with services being held at the Masonic lodge. The community was well known for its camp meetings and Fourth of July picnics, which attracted more than 1,000 people from around the country. The 1941 county highway map showed two churches, four businesses, and several scattered houses in Yarrellton. Its population was 58 that year, then went down to 35 from 1990 through 2000.[2]

Geography

Yarrellton is located on Farm to Market Road 1915, 9 mi (14 km) northwest of Cameron in northwestern Milam County.[2]

Education

The first school in Yarrellton was opened by Joe Eplin in 1876. Classes were held under a brush arbor.[2] Today, the community is served by the Cameron Independent School District.
