St. Luke's Hospital is a Massachusetts hospital located at 101 Page Street in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

History

The hospital was founded in 1884[1] by the Protestant Episcopal church with significant financial contributions from Horatio Hathaway, a church leader and one of the founders of Berkshire Hathaway.[2]

In 1996, St. Luke's merged with Charlton Memorial[3] in Fall River and Tobey Hospital[4] in Wareham to form the Southcoast Health System.

In 2006, St. Luke's began constructing a new Emergency Department, which includes nineteen new private treatment bays. In 2008, the In-House Patient Pharmacy Department installed a drug dispensing system throughout the floors called Pyxis Connect. Operations continued in 2009 with upgrades to the OR rooms and Endoscopy Departments, which received new machines in each room.

St. Luke's has 293 beds in service and offers extensive in-patient medical and surgical services,[5] with particular expertise in neurosurgery, cardiology, pediatric care, orthopedics, and general surgery. The hospitalist program delivers advanced medical care precisely when patients require it, boasting specialized proficiency in these fields. Leveraging advanced technology, St Luke’s offer patients comprehensive access to a wide array of diagnostic testing and rehabilitation services, available both on-site and at satellite locations.

St. Luke’s Emergency Department is one of the busiest in Massachusetts, delivering top-tier emergency services to nearby communities. The New Bedford emergency facilities uphold the highest standards of care, ensuring patients receive exceptional treatment in a safe and welcoming setting. Additionally, St Luke’s provides specialized pediatric services in collaboration with esteemed pediatricians from Boston Children’s Hospital, extending coverage to both the emergency room and pediatric unit.
