  • Fighting Fire: Jeff Sparks - Texas Parks and Wildlife People [Official]

Transcription

{{music}} [Jeff Sparks] You’re going to have two crews with you. [Jeff Sparks] My name’s Jeff Sparks, I’m the state parks wild land fire program manager. [Jeff Sparks] You good with that! [Jeff Sparks] I manage wild land fire or wildfires on our state parks and well as prescribed fires for habitat management purposes. {fire crackles} [Jeff Sparks] In 2005 we began to transition into more what I’m going to call a professional organization. By adopting these national standards we were now utilizing the same training, equipment, and qualification standards that firefighters were using throughout the United States. {fire crackles} [David Riskind] He is actually the person in state parks who took all of these resources… {fire crackles} [David Riskind] …and melded them into a seamless, professional, wild land firefighting cadre. [Greg Creacy] An ember fell in the crotch of that juniper tree. {fire crackles} [Jeff Sparks] During 2011 we maintained a very high state of preparedness. {fire engine starts up} [Jeff Sparks] We had nearly 200 wild land firefighters and seven engines that were ready to be dispatched at any given time to fight fires that were threatening state parks. {water sprays on tree} [Greg Creacy] He has had a vision, and his leadership has really taken the program to another level! {rake hits rocks} [Greg Creacy] And it’s really helped us in these extreme situations like the wildfires we’ve had in 2011. {{music}} {fire engine} [Jeff Sparks} I was here for the entire duration. {fire crackles} [Jeff Sparks] When the fire actually approached it was extremely intense. {fire crackles} [Jeff Sparks] At times there were fifty, sixty, even a hundred foot flames actually approaching many of our structures. {helicopter sounds} [Jeff Sparks] So our progressive hose lay actually comes up the hill from the lake, and at each structure we’ll have a y that breaks out and will totally surround the house with hoses, so that firefighters can stand and protect the structure as the fire approaches. {firefighter rakes dirt} [Jeff Sparks] So we had a good defensible space around each cabin. {music} {friend} How are you all holding up? [Jeff Sparks] Tired, very tired! {firefighters sprays burnt tree} [Jeff Sparks] During the Bastrop fire all of our state parks and wildlife division staff fighting the fire actually worked as a very cohesive team, we had great communication between all levels. {firefighter sprays fire} [Jeff Sparks] Hero’s we were not, we were doing our job. [Jeff Sparks] Do you copy? {truck drives off} {{music fades}}
