Parliamentary elections are scheduled to be held in Mongolia no later than June 2024 to determine the composition of the State Great Khural.

Background

The next election is scheduled to be held no later than June 2024. The current government's legitimacy was questioned during the 2022 protests after a corruption scandal involving the theft of $12.9 billion worth of coal.

Following the Mongolian Constitutional Court's in August 2022, to cancel the provision of Article 39, Section 1 of the Constitution, which states that "Prime Minister and no more than four members of the and the Government can hold the office of the member of the State Great Khural". On the opening of the 2022 spring extraordinary session, chairman of the State Great Khural, G. Zandanshatar stated that "In this regard, it is believed that there is a need to discuss and resolve the issues related to the number of members of parliament, the competence of the executive branch, the control and balance of governance, and the development of parliamentary democracy by establishing a National Consensus Working Group and discussing and resolving the issue".

State Great Khural passed a constitutional amendment on 2 June 2023, increasing the number of parliament members from 76 to 126.[4]

Electoral system

By new legislative law, elections in Mongolia will be organized using mixed-member majoritarian representation: 78 seats will be elected using majoritarian system, 48 seats will be elected by closed list proportional representation. The electoral threshold for the party will be 3% if the new election law would pass.[5]
