Claudine Luypaerts, better known as Maurane (12 November 1960 – 7 May 2018), was a Belgian singer and actress.

Biography

Early life

Claudine Luypaerts was born on 12 November 1960 in Ixelles, Brussels, to Guy-Philippe Luypaerts,[1] a composer and director of Académie de Musique of Verviers, and Jeannie Patureaux, a piano teacher.[2] When she was a teenager she took part in several musical contests.

Career

In 1979, she participated in the show, Brel en mille temps, with Philippe Lafontaine, she was discovered there by the French songwriter, Pierre Barouh.

She later got small contracts singing backing vocals in cafés for Jo Lemaire and Philippe Lafontaine until she released her first album in 1986.

In 2012, she became a member of the Jury in Nouvelle Star broadcast on television station D8. She and singer Pablo Villafranca had a daughter.[citation needed]

Death

On 7 May 2018 Maurane was found dead at the age of 57 beside her bathtub at her home in Schaerbeek in the area of Brussels, Belgium.[3][4]. The following day, the magistrate of the Brussels public prosecutor's office confirms the opening of a judicial inquiry, although the death of the singer is not considered as suspect. The first conclusions point to a probable heart attack[5] Her unexpected death deeply touched the world of music and her fans, as she was on stage two days earlier, for the celebration of the "iris festival" (fête de l'iris, FR) in Brussels.[citation needed]
