Mallard is an unincorporated community in Montague County, Texas, United States.[1] According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 12 in 2000.

History

It was given that name in honor of rancher A. M. Mallard, who built his headquarters close to the present-day townsite. In 1892, Mallard got a post office, which served the settlement until 1915. The community had one enterprise and 115 residents by the middle of the 1930s. The population of Mallard had decreased by the late 1940s to 50, a number that was constantly reported over the following decade, no doubt likely as a result of the agricultural crisis of the 1920s and 1930s, the Great Depression, and the disruptions brought on by World War II. Twenty people were living in Mallard in 1967, according to the latest available population figures. There were twelve people living there as of 2000.[2]

Geography

Mallard is located on Farm to Market Road 455, 5 mi (8.0 km) southeast of Montague in southeastern Montague County.[2]

Education

Today, the community is served by the Forestburg Independent School District.
