The brig ran aground on the Longsand, in the North Sea off the coast of Essex and sank with the loss of all but two of the eleven people on board. Survivors were rescued by the smackAgenoria (United Kingdom).[30][75]
The cutter left Wellington Harbour on 16 May, and was not heard from again. Wreckage found near Castlepoint on 28 May was believed to be the wreckage of the Kawai.[47]
