Hey this is Sean from sleepinglikealog.com, a site that shows you how to buy a mattress and how to get better quality sleep, and in this video I'm gonna be reviewing the Stearns & Foster Luxury Estate Marlyn Pillow-Top. As far as the overall feel of the Marlyn, I would say this is definitely a softer pillow-top. On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being super hard and a 10 being super soft, this is probably about a 9, 9 and a half. But it is firm from within. It's just the pillow-top itself that's very very soft and it creates an overall very soft feel. As far as who this would be best for, I would say this would be best for people who want to find that like, sleeping on a cloud type feel. They like to really be "in" the mattress as opposed to being "on" it, and they really just like to sink in and kind of snuggle into bed and enjoy like just a very soft, plush feel. This is also great for side sleepers in particular because it is so much easier on the shoulders and the hips because it is so soft, but it doesn't affect the support that you're getting from within. So as far as construction goes on this mattress I'll start from the coil system itself. And it's called the Intellicoil and it's a titanium alloy. So each coil is individually wrapped in its own pocket. And the interesting thing about this is it's actually two innersprings in one. So this is what it looks like on the inside, and they have this smaller, narrower coil in the center which is more for deep down back support. And then they put another one around the outer edge of the innerspring, which goes down a little bit easier and that's more for contouring to the body. So it actually performs two different roles. Alright so around the outside of the mattress you have a cashmere infused cover. Then underneath that you have the FlameGuard fiber which is wrapped around the entire mattress. And you also get some Eco Cotton and New Zealand wool blended in the pillowtop which is actually becoming a little bit more rare these days with major manufacturers. And you also get two layers of Sense Align Smart Latex and each one is .79" each thick. And you also get two inches of CaressFlex High Density foam which is polyurethane foam, it's a high density type of polyurethane foam designed to reduce motion transfer and to help conform a little bit better to the body. And you also have an inch of HD SuperSoft Foam which is really just polyurethane foam. And then you have another two inches of HD SuperSoft foam. And you have one inch of Hypersoft foam which is a softer blend of polyurethane foam. The you also get 1" of Ultra Soft foam. And then you have the foam encased edge. The entire perimeter is wrapped with a 2 1/2" thick high density layer of foam that they wrap around the entire perimeter of the mattress. Stearns & Foster was founded in 1846 under George Stearns and Seth Foster. And prior to 1983 they were considered like the premier luxury mattress brand. In 1983 Sealy acquired Stearns & Foster. And just this year, Tempur-Pedic acquired Sealy. As far as customer satisfaction goes, customer reviews for Stearns & Foster as a whole are mixed. According to Nick over at sleep like the dead dot com, who compiles tons, like hundreds of reviews from owners, Stearns & Foster has a customer satisfaction percentage of 58%, which is surprising because it's actually one of the lowest out of all of the national brands. And I think the reason why is Stearns & Foster these days is very different from Stearns & Foster used to be even just 10 years ago. When I first got into this industry about 12 years ago I remember the Stearns & Fosters back then. They were very different. They used to use really thick, heavy duty innersprings in the mattresses. They were 12 3/4" gauge which is a very thick innerspring, it's pretty much unheard of in this industry these days. Even the box springs were really strong, they used real box springs. They were all hand-tied, which is a very expensive process and its time consuming and its very rare these days as well. Even the covers used really nice fancy like, uh imported Belgian Damask covers and stuff so they were very luxurious. They were built like a tank. And I've sort of seen Stearns & Foster kind of go down a little bit in the quality department over the past decade. And, so if your parents had a Stearns & Foster or if your grandparents had a Stearns & Foster, it's not the same as Stearns & Foster being produced today. Some positives and negatives for this mattress. It's very comfortable. It really feels good, it's great for side sleepers it's great for back sleepers. If you're a stomach sleeper you might feel like your hammocking in just because it is a very soft pillow-top. Other than that it's super comfortable. The warranties are great on these, you get a 25-year warranty, however it is important to note that it is a--it's a limited warranty and the first 10 years are non-prorated, then the next 15 years are prorated. Another positive about this mattress is, it actually has some natural materials in it. So it's got wool, and it has cotton. And uh, that's pretty rare these days. Most national brands are not using these natural materials in their mattresses. So it's good to see that Stearns & Foster is using it for this one, even though it is a pretty small amount. As far as negatives go for this mattress, at $2699 to $3099 for a queen set, it's pretty expensive. And there are definitely better options out there, you definitely can get much more mattress for much less money these days. Another negative about this mattress is Stearns & Foster is still participating in the antiquated "different model name game." So, I'm reviewing the Marlyn, however this may be called the Blue Moon somewhere else or the uh, whatever whatever name they come up with. Each retailer has unique names generally. So, it's a very annoying process. It's not consumer friendly, and it's disappointing to see that they participate in that, in my opinion. Another negative is durability is gonna be an issue with this mattress. And that's because there is so much polyurethane foam. Polyurethane foam just does not have very good resiliency. Although the fact that this does have at least two layers of latex, not much, but the latex does help. Because the latex does have a much longer lifespan than polyurethane foam does.
