M. Badiul Alam (born 28 February 1949) is a Bangladeshi academic who served as the 13th vice chancellor of the University of Chittagong.[1][2]

Early life and education

M. Badiul Alam was born in Maheshkhali in the district of Cox's Bazar in 1949. He completed his undergraduate degree at the Chittagong Government College and subsequently his M.A. in Political Science at the University of Dhaka in 1969. He earned another M.A. in Political Science at the University of Waterloo, Canada in 1977 and finally his Ph.D. in Political Science at the University of Delhi, India in 1986.[3] He served as the dean, head of the Department of Political Science at the University of Chittagong and president of the Bangladesh Political Science Association.[1]

Career

Badiul Alam began his professional career as a Lecturer in Political Science at the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh in 1971; became Chairman of the department in 1980; promoted to the position of Professor in 1987; elected Dean of the faculty of Social Science in 1988; appointed as a Pro-Vice-Chancellor in 1991 and finally, Vice-Chancellor of the same University in 2006. He held all these position at the University of Chittagong. He was also the Vice-Chancellor of the Royal University of Dhaka in 2011.

Dr. Badiul Alam served as the President of the Bangladesh Political Science Association from 1990 until 1992 and has also served as the executing editor of Chittagong University Studies (Humanities, Social Science and Commerce), an Editorial Board Member of Bangladesh Political Studies, a Fellow of the International Centre for Asian Studies, Hong Kong, South Asian Studies group, Delhi etc.[1]

Formerly, he served as an Adjunct Faculty at the Northern University, Dhaka and Chittagong Independent University.

Dr. Badiul Alam received a Gold Medal for Bangladesh in 2006 from the Americal Biographical Institute for his outstanding contribution to social and educational development in Bangladesh. He also received an Order of International Ambassador (OIA) Medal for the year 2008 from the same institute for his outstanding services to world society.

Dr. Badiul Alam published papers in international journals. His fields of study includes governance studies with reference to South and Southeast Asian countries, social change and development, comparative political systems of developed and developing countries, democracy and authoritarianism, and globalization. He is an author of Democracy and Authoritarianism (Bangali: 'গণতন্ত্র ও কর্তৃত্ববাদ'), a book used as a reference book in many of the universities and colleges in Bangladesh.
