Iran–Myanmar relations

Iran–Myanmar relations

Iran

Myanmar

Iran and Myanmar established diplomatic relations on 8 August 1968.[1] Both countries are members of the Non-Aligned Movement. Iran has a non-resident ambassador located in Bangkok.

History

Iran was a supporter of the Than Shwe government and was among 25 countries to vote against condemning the Burmese government in 2008.[2] Like wise, Myanmar voted against condemning Iran in 2008.[3]

Relations grew a bit more sour during the Rohingya crisis. Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif condemned Myanmar on behalf of the Iranian government. Zarif urged the international community to take action before it was too late.[4] Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has said his country will work to mount pressure on Myanmar from international side to resolve the Rohingya crisis. "We will work to create international pressure on Myanmar (to resolve the Rohingya crisis),” he said during a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the bilateral booth of Baku Congress Center where the NAM Summit is taking place.[4]

Relations since the 2021 Coup d'etat

Relations drastically improved following the rise of Min Aung Hlaing who came to power in the 2021 Myanmar coup d'état. Prior to the military takeover, Naypyitaw and Tehran had a distant relationship. Myanmar and Iran have engaged in military-to-military cooperation since the coup.[5] The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps are present in Myanmar and have provided military aid including drones and missiles to the Tatmadaw.[6] Myanmar has focused on improving relations with Russia, China, Iran, and Belarus among other countries since the Junta's international isolation.
