History

The Consulate General of the United States in Milan has a storied presence in the city, having been established in 1865 as a Consular Agency under the jurisdiction of the Consulate in Florence and later Genoa. In 1874, it became a full Consulate. Historical records from 1879 highlight that the Consulate was situated on via Principe Amedeo in downtown Milan.

The Consulate moved to its present location in the Montecatini Building, a design by the Italian architect Gio Ponti, in 1985. This location overlooks the Piazza Stati Uniti d’America, which was rededicated in remembrance of the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks.[1]
