Ирвинг Хоу (англ. Irving Howe; 11 июня 1920 — 5 мая 1993) — американский литературный критик, видный политический деятель «Демократических социалистов Америки».

Биография

Родился в Бронксе (Нью-Йорк) в семье еврейских иммигрантов из Бессарабии — Нетти (ур. Гольдман) и Давида Горенштейнов, которые держали продуктовый магазин, разорившийся во времена Великой депрессии.^[1]

В 1940 году окончил Городской колледж Нью-Йорка.^[2] В школе он постоянно участвовал в спорах по поводу значения социализма, сталинизма, фашизма и иудаизма. В политических целях летом 1940 года сменил фамилию на Хоу.

Во время Второй мировой войны служил в армии США.

По возвращении начал писать заметки и критические статьи в независимый социалистический журнал Partisan Review , а так же эссе для Commentary, Politics, The Nation, The New Republic, and The New York Review of Books.

В 1950-х годах преподавал еврейскую и английскую литературу в Брандейском университете в Уолтеме (штат Массачусетс).

Политические взгляды

Со времен учебы в колледже, Хоу был убежденным демократическим социалистом.

Со времен своего Городского колледжа Хоу был приверженцем левой политики. Он был убежденным социал-демократом на протяжении всей своей жизни. В 1930-х годах он присоединился к молодёжному крылу Социалистической партии Америки — Социалистической лиге молодёжи, которая тогда как раз находилась под влиянием троцкистов, затем основавших Социалистическую рабочую партию. Хоу был известным литературным критиком и писателем. Написал биографии Томаса Харди, Уильяма Фолкнера и Шервуда Андерсона. Кроме того, Ирвинг Хоу написал биографию кумира своего детства, Льва Троцкого.

Писал книги, посвященные еврейской культуре.

За книгу «Социализм и Америка», в 1987 году, Хоу получил премию Мак-Артура.

Личная жизнь

Ирвинг Хоу был трижды женат.

Со второй женой, Таисией Филлипс, у него было двое детей — Нина и Николас Хоу.
