The Greeklanguage may be regarded in the lightof a mental gymnastic. It was the ap-paratus for the expression of mentalactivities which were as vehement intheir kind as were the restless energiesof the body. We are here to regard thelanguage in the light of an apparatus bywhich Greek thought found expressiotjand the Greek mind was perfected.

It is perhaps not yet determined precisely to what extent theone is dependent on the other for itsexistence, to what extent all thoughtstands waiting for the word which is to be its vehicle of revelation. We mayregard the word as the avatar of theidea. The spoken form is the corporatetangible fact necessary for the expression of the incorporate, intangible essence.It may be fitting to say that ideality in its abstract form may exist in the human mind, or, to use the tangible agent, in the human brain, without the concomi-tant of words; but that ideality can only be coined into thought through the agency of language.
