STRONG VINCENT. Colonel Eighty-third Pennsylvania Volunteers.Brigaflier General U. S. Volunteers. The past three have been eventful weeks and I begin tohope the back of the rebellion is broken. If the Mississippihad any special relation to the monster, it certainly is, foryesterday we received official information that the river wasopen. At Gettysburg I think we broke the ribs on oneside. At all events we came nearer to it than we ever didbefore. Oh, that was a terrible fight! I rode over a greatpart of the ground on the left, on the 5th, and of all thecarnage I ever saw that was the most horrible. All over thefield were scattered black and bloated corpses of men. anddead horses, wrecks of caissons and gun carriages. I wasgalloping along the road when all at once my horse sprangto one side, and looking to see what started him, I saw thebodies of thirteen rebels lying in the mud with the pitilessrain beating on their ghastly faces.
