Уилер, Джордж Карлос

Джордж Карлос Уилер (англ. George C. Wheeler, 1897 год — 1991 год) — крупный американский мирмеколог, энтомолог, профессор, работал в Сиракузском университете, Университете Северной Дакоты, Университете Невады в Рино, крупнейший в мире специалист по личинкам муравьёв^[1].

Биография

Родился в 1897 году. Обучался в Rice Institute в штате Техас (США), работал под руководством крупного американского биолога Джулиана Хаксли и будущего нобелевского лауреата профессора Германа Джозефа Мёллера. В 1918 году получил степень бакалавра, после чего был принят в Bussey Institution при Harvard University (Кэмбридж, штат Массачусетс). Он изучал энтомологию и в 1920 году получил степень магистра наук, а в 1921 году — степень доктора наук (Ph.D)^[1].

Получив докторскую степень по энтомологии, Уилер с 1921 по 1926 годы работал инструктором и доцентом в Сиракузском университете в городе Сиракьюс (штат Нью-Йорк). После этого он присоединился к Университет Северной Дакоты, где он продолжал работать на протяжении всей своей карьеры, занимая такие должности, как профессор биологии (1926—1965), заведующий кафедрой биологии (1926—1963) и профессор университета^[1].

Уилер начал изучать муравьёв на исследовательской станции острова Барро Колорадо в Панамском канале в 1924 году, куда его пригласил Уильям Мортон Уилер, который обучал его в Гарварде вместе с Чарльзом Томасом Брюсом. Он много работал над анализом морфологии и таксономии личинок муравьев, а также изучал муравьев Северной Дакоты и пустыни^[1].

Уилер ушел в отставку в 1967 году. Университет Северной Дакоты назначил его заслуженным профессором биологии. Он также получил звание научного сотрудника Института исследований пустыни в университете Невады^[1].

Личная жизнь

Первый раз женился на исследовательнице Эстер Холл (D.Sc. Esther Hall), которая умерла в 1944 году. В 1946 году он был вторично женат на Джанет Норрис Уилер (Jeanette Norris Wheeler) с которой они вместе опубликовали множество совместных научных статей. Умер в 1991 году^[1].
