Mystus es un género de peces siluriformes de la familia Bagridae del sur y este de Asia.[1] El género fue descrito primero por Valenciennes en 1840. Mystusestá escasamente diagnosticada. Anteriormente otros autores utilizaron Macrones para este género, pero este nombre genérico fue utilizado previamente por Coleoptera.[2] Las relaciones filogenéticas dentro del género están mal comprendidas, aunque se ha sugerido que hay dos linajes mayores.[3] En 2005 se confirmó que este género es parfilético.[3]
Hay dos especies fósiles que se asignan a este género, ambas del periodo terciario temprano de la cuenca de Sanshui en Guangdong, China:
