Granville Bates (7 de enero de 1882 – 8 de julio de 1940) fue un actor que solía interpretar a gente corriente y jugadores de poca monta que apareció en más de noventa películas.

Biografía

Bates nació en Chicago en 1882. Comenzó su carrera cinematográfica en la década de 1910 en los estudios Essanay de la industria cinematográfica de Chicago.^[1]​ Apareció en Broadway a finales de los años 20 y principios de los 30, especialmente en la producción original de Merrily We Roll Along (1934) de George S. Kaufman y Moss Hart.^[2]​ También fue el director de la producción original de Twentieth Century (1932).

Desde los años 30, apareció en varias películas clásicas, aunque a veces no acreditado. Recibió una mención favorable por personajes como el de Mi esposa favorita (My Favorite Wife, 1940), donde interpretaba a un juez irascible, y acerca del que el crítico del periódico The New York Times, Bosley Crowther escribió: «El Sr. Bates merece mención aparte por su magistral creación cómica».^[3]​ Otro crítico del New York Times señaló que «Edward Ellis y Granville Bates provocaron ayer a una audiencia temprana una risa suave en una secuencia breve pero silenciosamente divertida» en Chatterbox (1936),^[4]​ mientras que Crowther elogió su trabajo en Men Against the Sky (1940), diciendo: «Las interpretaciones de los jugadores son del tipo bursátil y peatonal, excepto la de Granville Bates como un cínico banquero».^[5]​ Bates murió de un ataque al corazón en 1940.
