Algunos protocolos populares son OSCAR (AIM, ICQ), XMPP (Jabber), IRC, MSNP (Windows Live Messenger), MTProto (Telegram), y Skype. Muchos clientes de mensajería instantánea populares incluyen soporte para VOIP (voice over ip, en español voz por ip) y videoconferencias.
