Er führte fünf der wichtigsten Expeditionen des 19. Jahrhunderts zur Erforschung der USA durch. Sein Verdienst als Entdecker liegt vor allem in der Erforschung des Gebirgsteils der USA sowie günstiger Überlandwege, die später von der Eisenbahn oder als Trails genutzt werden. Über seine Reisen und sein Leben schrieb er mehrere Bücher.
