Zelda is a nickname for the feminine name Griselda,[1] from Old High German grisja hilda, "gray battle-maid".[2][3] It is also the feminine form of the Yiddish name Selig,[1] meaning "blessed", "happy".[4]

Since 1986, the name has been associated with the popular Nintendo franchise The Legend of Zelda and its eponymous character Princess Zelda.
