Wildcat Comic Con was a comic book convention held in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, United States, at the Pennsylvania College of Technology. The convention's name came from the mascot of the Pennsylvania College of Technology.[1] Wildcat Comic Con placed extra value with educators and librarians and how comic books and graphic novels can be used in the educational fields.[2]

>> I like to meet the kids. I have two kids; almost a four-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl, and they're interested in cartoons and in the world of cartoons, and I love meeting the kids it's really awesome. And it's just nice to share also with kids that are you know, at the college age and are looking to go into acting or voiceovers. To sort of explain to them how you really need to focus and hone in, and not get distracted by other things, and take care of your voice with good vocal help and things like that. So I enjoy helping people, and spreading the word, and since I was invited, I thought why not. Sometimes it just seems like this-- like a dream that's unattainable and so far away, and it's nice to let them know that like you can achieve those they're not unattainable. You just have to stay focused and make contacts and study, go to school for it, you know. Just because you do a voice doesn't mean that you can be an actor doing voice just because you can impersonate someone else. You have to come up with your own original stuff, and you have to know what's going on inside the mind of the actor, and-- I'm sorry. The mind of the character, and the background, and the relationships, and emotional like, and learn how to portray that for your voice. I had amazing parents that knew nothing. I mean they knew nothing about my business, but they were willing to say, "Now what is it that you want?" You know. They were willing to support me, and understand that I was really, really serious about it. This wasn't just some like Mom I want to grow up and be an actor, you know. I had this idea of what I wanted to do, and they believed me, and they believed in me, and they supported me, and that's how I was able to do it. But without their support or somebody saying you can do it, you know. It's hard to get permission to go into a field that is so unstable and up and down. And I have ups and downs just like everybody else, but I guess I just want to say to people who are interested in it, that if it's the only thing that you can see yourself doing, then you have to do it. But if you can see yourself doing other things, it's not for you. It's just not for you.

Programming

Wildcat Comic Con typically featured an animation film festival, artist alley, author book-signings, author luncheons, cosplay competition, exhibitors, drawing sessions, fan presentations, LAN party, masquerade ball, portfolio reviews, professional presentations, Star Wars impersonators, vendors, video game contests and demonstrations, and workshops.[1][3][4]

History

The convention was the first large scale Comic Con to be held in Central Pennsylvania and the first to be held by a college.[1] The idea for the convention came from John Weaver, a high school teacher. It was primarily organized by Lisette Ormsbee (director of the Madigan Library) and John Shableski (former comics distributor), neither of which had previous experience hosting a comic convention.[4][5][6] The convention evolved from lectures hosted with the local high school to promote Penn College's video game program.[4] Early in the planning of the convention, discussions were held about naming the convention Millionaire Comic-Con (the high schools mascots name), and holding it at Williamsport High School.[7] Several comic book nights "ComiXnite" were held during the fall at Penn College on Wednesday nights to build interest in the convention.[7] In the first year the convention provided eighty hours of content.[4] In 2014, the convention held post event programming that included game shows and gaming.[8]

The convention received financial support from the community in 2013 including a $9,000 grant from the Lycoming County Visitors Bureau (Lycoming County Travel and Tourism Initiative) and $2,250 from the Pennsylvania Army National Guard (Heroes 4 Higher group).[9] The Lycoming County Visitors Bureau raised its funding from $5,000 in 2012. In 2013 the convention had 38 vendors, an increase from 10 in 2012.[10] The Lycoming County Visitors Bureau granted $10,000 to Wildcat Comic Con in 2014 for advertising.[11]
