History

TUKO.co.ke has its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. The news website is a partner of Legit (ex-GMEM), a global media holding, which also cooperates with Legit.ng (in Nigeria), Yen.com.gh (in Ghana), Briefly News (in South Africa) and Sports Brief (worldwide).[1]

In October, 2015, alongside with the website TUKO.co.ke started its YouTube Channel. Currently, it has more than 900K subscribers and published more than 1.6K videos, which include interviews, human stories, current affairs and entertainment news.[2][3]

In January 2017, TUKO.co.ke started publishing in Swahili.[4]

In 2021, Tuko.co.ke, as well as its sister projects, becomes a member of the United Nations SDG Media Compact.[5]

In October, 2022, TUKO.co.ke became a major media sponsor of Miss World Kenya Beauty Pageant, and already in a month became a media sponsor of Kenyan Sol Fest 2022.[6]

In March, 2023, TUKO.co.ke collaborated with Meta in a digital community campaign focused on highlighting distinctive narratives from Africa that motivated communities for African Change.[7]

In April, 2023, the digital media house appointed a new Managing Director, Julia Majale, who came after Gibendi Ramenya.[8]

In August, 2023, TUKO.co.ke partnered with WAN-IFRA Women In News for Advisory. It led Tuko.co.ke's Managind Director, Julia Majale, to the participation in Africa Digital Media Conference as a panelist in the discussion about a diversity in leadership.[9]

In September, 2023, Tuko.co.ke became a media sponsor of Dignity Diaper Campaign.[10][11]

In December 2023, TUKO.co.ke got the Pacesetter Entertainment News Award at the continental awards event hosted by Jubilant Stewards of Africa.[12]

Meaning of name

The name "TUKO" is translated from Swahili language as "we are here", or " we are there"[13] or simply "We are", at least according to The Guide Kenya.

Popularity

In January 2017 TUKO.co.ke became the number one news and entertainment website[14] barely two years after being set up, beating Nation and Standard Media Group.[15][16]

As of October 2017, TUKO.co.ke has more than 1.7 million website users.[17] Currently the website's Facebook community is almost 6 million fans. TUKO.co.ke also exists on Android applications.[18][19]

In September, 2018, Tuko.co.ke becomes Best Entertainment News Platform at the Digital Inclusion Awards 2018.[20]

By 2019, Tuko.co.ke's mobile app was ranked 2nd most recognised news app in Kenya.[21]

The same year, TUKO.co.ke was named Best Digital News Platform during 3rd Digital Tech Excellence Awards.[22]

In April, 2021, Tuko.co.ke became the only media source from Kenya to be nominated for One World Media Special Award.[23][24]

At the same time, Tuko.co.ke was ranked third by Alexa after Google and YouTube in the list.[25]

Later in 2021, TUKO.co.ke won the 5th Digital Tech Excellence Awards.[26]

In February, 2022, TUKO.co.ke was in top of most-visited websites in Kenya based on total monthly traffic.[27]

In June, 2023, TUKO.co.ke gets a title from Reuters Institute of Journalism and joins INMA.[28][29]

In July, 2022, TUKO.co.ke was named Best Digital Media Brand at the Digital Tech 100 Awards.[30]

In December, 2022, TUKO.co.ke won the Top Star Digital Brand at the Top Star Brands Awards 2022.[31]

In February 2023, TUKO.co.ke received the top ranking as the Most Visited News Website, as awarded by the Media Council of Kenya.[32]

In May, 2023, TUKO.co.ke was recognized as the Most Preferred News Website among millennials and Generation Z.[33]

In November, 2023, TUKO.co.ke won Digitally Fiit Award in the category Top Digitally Fit News Agency and Service of 2023.[34][35]

Managing Director: Julia Majale

Julia Majale, with over eight years in media, leads TUKO.co.ke as Managing Director. She holds a B.A. in Communications from Daystar University and an Executive Masters from Aga Khan University. Her accolades include guiding TUKO.co.ke to multiple awards and being listed among the Top 25 Women in Digital.[36]

Managing Editor (Editor-in-Chief): Jacob Otieno

Jacob Otieno, with over eight years in media, is the Managing Editor at TUKO.co.ke. A Maseno University graduate, he previously worked at The East African Business Times and became Head of Business Department at TUKO.co.ke in 2020.[37]

Head of Department (Human Interest): Racheal Nyaguthie

Racheal Nyaguthie leads the Human Interest Department at TUKO.co.ke. With a BSc in Communication and Public Relations from Rongo University, she has over five years in journalism and digital media.[38]

Head of Department (Entertainment): Victor Otengo

Victor Otengo, a Multimedia University of Kenya graduate, heads the Entertainment Department at TUKO.co.ke. He has five years of experience in journalism.[39]

Head of Department (Politics/Current Affairs): Masolo Mabonga

Masolo Mabonga, a Maseno University graduate, is the head of Politics/Current Affairs at TUKO.co.ke. With over five years in media, he joined the team in 2019."[40]
