Trà Vinh City (Khmer: ព្រះត្រពាំង Preah Trapeang lit. 'Sacred pond') is the capital city of Trà Vinh province in Southern Vietnam.
Etymology
The name Trà Vinh comes from the Khmer name of the area ព្រះត្រពាំង Preah Trapeang, which means Sacred pond or Buddha's pond. The Vietnamese transliteration gave Trà Vang and later Trà Vinh.[1][2][3]
Location
It is located in the Mekong Delta region, which is in the Southern part of Vietnam. Under the Republic of Vietnam, it was the provincial capital of a province with a population of 51,535.
Government Resolution No. 11/NQ-CP 04/03/2010 established the city of Trà Vinh with an area of 6803.5 hectares and a population of 131,360 inhabitants and 10 administrative units.
On February 15, 2016, Trà Vinh City was classified as a level II city in Vietnam's cities classification system.
Trà Vinh had 1,286,000 inhabitants in 2019.

Vào năm 1911, Hội nghiên cứu Đông Dương xuất bản quyển "Monographie de la Province de Vinh Long, Tra Vinh" (chuyên khảo về tĩnh Vĩnh Long, Trà Vinh), trong đó viết: "Trà Vang là chữ đọc trại của từ Khmer "Prắc Prabăng", nghĩa là "Ao Phật", nằm ở làng Đôn Hóa, trong tổng Trà Phú, các tỉnh lỵ 6km. Cạnh ao này có một ngôi chùa được dựng lên để kỷ niệm một lễ lớn có từ ngày xưa. Tương truyền, có một vị vua Khmer bị đắm thuyền trên bờ địa hạt, và được cứu sống nhờ ơn của đức Phật. Vì không có chữ Hán nào phiên âm được hai từ trên, nên đã dùng chữ "Trà" thay cho chữ "Prắc" và chữ "Vang" thay cho chữ "Băng", từ đó ra chữ "Ravang" (hay Trà Vang), về sau viết thành Trà Vinh". Cũng có tương truyền rằng: "Trà Vang xuất âm Khmer: "Préah Trapéang" nơi có nghĩa là tìm được tượng Phật bằng đá trong ao nước. Sự tích này không biết có từ bao giờ, năm đó, trong một trận nước lụt, dân làng thấy một tượng Phật trôi tấp vào bờ ao, liền rước về một gò cao, cạnh đó xây chùa thờ phượng. Chùa được đặt tên Bodhisalareaj, nay gọi là chùa Ông Mẹt (phường 1, TP.Trà Vinh, tỉnh Trà Vinh), tên vị sư cả đầu tiên: Trapéang, được Hán Việt hóa thành âm: "Trà Vang", sau bị nói trại thành Trà Vinh".Đó là lý giải về tên gọi. Vậy, đất Trà Vang có từ bao giờ?

TTrước đây vùng đất Trà Vinh còn được gọi là xứ Trà Vang. Tên Trà Vang vốn có nguồn gốc từ ngôn ngữ Môn-Khmer cổ mà dân gian thường gọi là Trah Păng. Tên gọi ấy phản ánh đặc điểm cảnh quan thuở xa xưa của một vùng đất mới được bồi đắp ở ven sông, ven biển, có nhiều vùng trũng, đầm lầy,... Vì vậy, Trà Vinh là tỉnh còn tương đối "non trẻ".

Tra Vinh was called Tra Vang back in the old days according to the language of the Khmer people. It'd officially got the name in 1876 when the French ruled the south of Vietnam.
