Guerin Colvin to deliver our commencement speech Thank You president of idea Provost out Rowlands members of the Board of Regents faculty staff proud family and friends and most importantly the class of 2019 it is truly an honor to be a small part of your wonderful celebration in this afternoon class of 2019 this is a time when you will hear some encouraging phrases such as the sky's the limit and dream big because anything is possible I stand here today as proof that this is absolutely correct anything is possible my story began 36 years ago when I started as an entry-level accounting clerk at st. Elizabeth Healthcare 32 quick years later and nine positions later I was announced as a new president and chief executive officer I plan to share with you some of the things that facilitated my progression to the top but as you would imagine and could guess there are no shortcuts let's begin with patience chasing your dream will take time please do not get frustrated it took me 18 years to get the first dream I had which was to be the C CFO of st. Elizabeth healthcare as CFO I thought I would retire as CFO had no dream to move on because the CFO was was basically my dream I'm here to tell you you need to dream bigger 13 shortly years later is you know I was announced by our then Board Chair dr. Jimbo tuba as the CEO of st. Elizabeth healthcare I was blessed at an early age to know I love math and basically didn't like any other subject this limited my options for a future but really allowed me to focus on a career path that suited my strengths I shared this because it's important to differentiate a career path from a job and it's important to do what is rewarding to you work hard to find and start your career success is when you do what you love and love what you do I get asked quite often why do I love health care so much after 36 years of the same industry and an industry that has many challenges ahead why do I love health care my reply is simple I don't love health care I love st. Elizabeth health care and the people in it I can't explain how rewarding it is to work for an organization that has a purpose much greater than a bottom line I'll give you some advice find a mentor a life coach someone who can provide you guidance and support someone that is respected in your organization and that you respect be a sponge soak up all their knowledge and learn from them I had several mentors throughout my career and I would be not I would not be here today if it weren't for them keep in mind you can learn a great deal from your mentors mistakes watch how they deal with adversity so you're prepared to deal with adversity when it's your turn trust me you will get your turn when this occurs you will not be judged by the mistake you made but how you dealt with the adversity I will give you this promise today if you search for a mentor and can't find one call me I'll be glad to be your mentor a positive attitude makes all the difference in the world an attitude determines everything else in your life if you only take one thing away from my speech today please no attitude determines everything else in your life I've always looked at the glass being half full versus half-empty I believe my attitude and my determination to make everyone around me better is why I progressed through our organization I've ansed without an actual job interview and talk applied for the CEO position that's right a promotions where I was hand-picked for the role without actually applying promotion it's very difficult to advance in a corporation with a bad attitude it's difficult to advance in an organization if you're not a team player my favorite quote by harry s truman it is amazing what you can accomplish if you don't care who gets the credit this is how I lead every day before I conclude I want to talk about trust Trust is not given it has to be earned Trust is as simple as the following if you tell someone you're going to do something then you need to do it exactly how you said you would do it and you need to do it when you said you were going to do it I'll be honest with you I had a trouble with trust it wasn't because I was lied are I lied and I wasn't trustworthy it was because I was given unrealistic expectations to people who needed project work done by me my mentors pointed this out to me and together we worked out a plan on how I can communicate more accurate timelines and from there everything worked smoothly today we are gathered for one reason to celebrate your dream your dream sometimes forgotten fuels you it follows you sometimes when you try to ignore it without your dream your diploma will be a piece of paper it is your dream that will bring your diploma to life what I wish for you what your friends wish for you what your professors wish for you and what your proud families and parents wish for you is that you use your education stay positive work hard and go out and fulfill your dream once you achieve that dream and we know you will don't settle be optimistic pick a new dream and go achieve that one to continue dreaming even bigger one day you will find yourself looking back 30 years thanking just how fortunate you were to such an incredibly wonderful life please know I'm a proud to be a graduate of Benkei you and thankful for everything NKU has done for me congratulations to introduce our student speaker this afternoon please welcome Hanna Eden president of the Student Government Association and member of the Board of Regents good afternoon it is my honor to introduce our student speaker this afternoon Tila Blasingame who is graduating from the College of Education and Human Services with a master of Social Work degree Tila is a first generation college graduate coming to NKU for her master's work after completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Cincinnati she first became interested in the mental health field after a study abroad project in South Africa that focused on the business and social impacts of healthcare and she hasn't looked back says currently Tila works at Greater Cincinnati behavioral health services whereas she is able to fuel her passions for mental health awareness she is very active in her community and serves as a volunteer for Cincinnati Children's Hospital the American Red Cross Association and Sharon Anderson Skills Academy during her studies at NKU Sheila is also been an active member of the master of Social Work african-american graduate study Advisory Council after graduation Tila plans on continuing her career in the mental health field with a focus on community education please join me in welcoming a Miss Tila Blasingame Thank You Hannah for the introduction I appreciate it it gives me great pleasure to walk them all of our family and friends here today Wow you guys we did it we're here through the restless nights of studying missed assignments late assignments high stress levels lack of funds we made it to the finish line today is a day of celebration a day of acknowledgment rewards gifts some of us may receive electronic gifts gift cards clothing maybe cash hopefully one of my gifts is a Cricut machine and if my family has not bought it you can stop it Michael's on the way home now R sell four hundred and ninety nine dollars but these material gifts are nice but for the moment we don't need them you don't need any of it yes I just told your family to take the gifts back but we don't need it we insert this room with the greatest gifts that no one can give us and that is the gift of our education and we earned that the material gifts they can be broken they lose their value its no value but our education that can never be taken away from us the knowledge that we carry the value never decreases it only increases growing up my grandmother she would beat herself up at times because she was not able to provide material things at the time I didn't understand it cuz I'm like we have the things that we need I don't know what she stressed out about it wasn't it so probably about 12 when I was like hold on other kids got cellphones and I don't yeah but no material item that she ever felt that she could give me led up to the ultimate gift that she embodied inside of me she gave me the gift of opportunity and determination she always made her way out of no way and she encouraged all of us to follow our dreams no matter what she did not have the opportunity to attend college herself but that never stops her from encouraging us that never stopped her from telling us not to box ourselves into any statistic to never having anyone tell us that we can't do or be what we wanted to be after that I am forever grateful as we began on our little journeys because that's what it is anytime one chapter is over either you open another book or you flip the page to a new chapter but this one it's done we must not forget the greatest gifts that we have we must not forget the blood sweat tears self-care partying that we did to achieve our goals our education is everlasting our knowledge is everlasting and we must continue to pay it forward a Chinese philosopher once said if you give a man a fish you feed him for a day you teach a man to fish and you feed them for a lifetime we must continue that as we go out into the world and share our gifts and our talents with others so that we can continue to pay it forward I know you guys are anxious like me so I wrap this up wherever you go go with all your heart never let anyone close the door and you will tell you that you cannot do it and always stay ten toes down at all times congratulations class of 2011 please welcome mr. staff thank you for always putting our students first and continuously thinking about their success speaking of success supporting our students is at the forefront of everyone's role and responsibility on this campus I'll share with you a recent example of how NKU came together to help students in need the adult learner program and services had two student parents who were having difficulty paying for their caps and gowns for this ceremony they reached out to our the the university connect and persist office who then connected with the alumni programs office and special events and they all got together and figured out that they could find a way to support these students with their graduation cap and gowns and we have them proudly in the audience today this work is not done we've recognized that this indeed perhaps here and so in fact we're going to find a way to make sure we have ongoing support for any student who finds that they need some help in order to walk through graduation this commitment to learners and students is something I've witnessed throughout my first 300 days on the job I have seen firsthand the impact our talented faculty and staff have on our students lives I've gotten to know many of you our wonderful students I've met so many of the alumni who proudly carry the no spirit throughout the region and across the country I've connected with community leaders business partners and K through 12 educators to understand our University's role in serving Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky I was privileged to celebrate all that makes our university great during inauguration week we celebrated our community our students our faculty and staff and I was deeply honored to be installed as the sixth president by the Board of Regents during a memorable investiture ceremony in this very arena and just last month the Board of Regents unanimously approved success by design m'kay use three-year strategic framework this framework will guide us and help provide greater access to an NKU education for all deserving students it will help our students overcome barriers to completing their educational goals and to advance opportunities for career and community engagement for all our students it's been an exciting time at NKU and I'm thrilled to wrap up this academic year with you today as you begin the next chapter of your life a few challenges and adversity adversity but you have persisted and are ready for the next phase of your journey the late great Nelson Mandela once said it always seems impossible until it's done but the evaluate and challenge there's max Dupree an American business leader and writer once said we need to give each other the space to grow to be ourselves to exercise our diversity we need to give each Background

Bliley was born on January 28, 1932, in Chesterfield County, Virginia. He attended private Catholic schools and graduated in 1948 at the age of 16 from Benedictine High School (Richmond, Virginia).

In 1952, Bliley earned a B.A. in Political Science from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.. He subsequently served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1955. He worked as a funeral director for Joseph W. Bliley Co. Funeral Home, a family business, eventually serving as President.[2]

Bliley, a practicing Roman Catholic, is married to the former Mary Virginia Kelley and is the father of two. He has four grandchildren, a step-grandson, two great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter.[3]

Political career

In 1968, Bliley was elected vice-mayor of Richmond.[4] He held that post until 1970, when he successfully ran for mayor, a position he held until 1977.[4] Bliley grew up as a conservative Southern Democrat, but became a Republican after his term as mayor.

In 1980, Bliley won the Republican nomination for Congress representing Virginia's 3rd congressional district after 12-year incumbent David Satterfield announced his retirement.[5] He won with 52 percent of the vote, becoming the first Republican to win an undisputed victory in the district since Reconstruction. (In 1890, the House awarded Republican Edmund Waddill the seat after a disputed election.)

The 3rd, however, had been trending Republican for some time at the national level.[6] It had been one of the first areas of Virginia where the old Byrd Democrats started splitting their tickets and voting Republican in presidential elections. As a result, it had not supported a Democrat for president since 1948, and had actually come close to electing a Republican twice in the 1960s, with the Democrats only surviving by less than 1,000 votes.

Bliley would never face another contest anywhere near as close as his first one. He was reelected five times from the 3rd with little difficulty, only facing an independent in 1984 and running completely unopposed in 1988. After the 1990 census, the Democratic-controlled Virginia General Assembly began the process of redistricting the state. It was faced with a Justice Department order to create a majority-black district in order to comply with the Voting Rights Act. The legislature responded by shifting most of Richmond, which by this time had a black majority, into a new, majority-black 3rd district. Bliley's district was renumbered the 7th, and retained most of the whiter and wealthier sections of Richmond, along with several suburbs. Bliley now represented the most Republican district in Virginia, and he was handily reelected to four more terms, retiring in January 2001. Indeed, at the time the 7th was so heavily Republican that after it was redrawn in 1992, Bliley only faced a Democrat once, in 1996.

In 1995, when the Republican Party gained majority control of the Congress,[7] Bliley was elected Chairman of the House Commerce Committee, a position he held for six years. He was a principal author of several important laws including the Telecommunications Act of 1996, the Food and Drug Administration Modernization Act of 1997, the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act and the Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999, also known as the "Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act".
