The Great North is an American adult animated sitcom created by Wendy Molyneux, Lizzie Molyneux, and Minty Lewis for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The Molyneux sisters and Lewis serve as executive producers along with Loren Bouchard.[1] The series premiered on January 3, 2021 and stars Nick Offerman, Jenny Slate, Will Forte, Dulcé Sloan, Paul Rust, Aparna Nancherla, Megan Mullally, and Alanis Morissette.

In June 2020, the series was renewed for a second season ahead of the premiere of the first.[2]

Beef Tobin is a single father living in the fictional town of Lone Moose, Alaska with his four children, Wolf, Ham, Judy, and Moon. Beef's life is centered on raising his children and keeping the family together. He is sometimes overbearing and smothering, but his deep love for his family is a central theme in each episode in the series. [3]

Voice cast

  • Nick Offerman as Beef Tobin, a fisherman and divorced father of four. Beef is still coming to terms with being abandoned by his ex-wife Kathleen. He spent years pretending that she died tragically, despite each of the Tobin children knowing the truth. He is a supportive father who encourages his children to love and respect others, although he sometimes struggles with the many changes happening in their lives and worries that they will grow apart.[2]
  • Jenny Slate as Judy Tobin, an artistically-inclined sixteen-year-old and Beef's only daughter. Judy loves her family, sharing a deep bond with her "Alaskan twin" brother Ham (they are not actual twins, but we born 9 months apart). She dreams of exploring the world beyond their small, remote hometown.[2]
  • Will Forte as Wolf Tobin, Beef's oldest son and fiancée of Honeybee. A sensitive and optimistic young man, Wolf longs to make his father proud, although his eagerness often puts him beyond his depth.[2]
  • Dulcé Sloan as Honeybee Shaw, Wolf's fiancée. Confident and adventurous, she moved from her hometown of Fresno after falling in love with Wolf, and is now adapting to life in a small Alaskan fishing town.[2]
  • Paul Rust as Ham Tobin, Beef's middle son. Ham is openly gay, which is embraced by his family. He shares a deep bond with his "Alaskan twin" sister Judy, and they often collaborate on creative endeavors. He enjoys baking, and secretly becomes the town's "cake lady" after the previous one was arrested.[2]
  • Aparna Nancherla as Moon Tobin, Beef's youngest son, who shares his father's stoic demeanor and passion for outdoorsmanship. Despite being only 10 years old, he is unafraid of the intimidating Alaskan wildlife, and is often seen building traps for various animals (from ruffed grouse to Bigfoot) or exploring the wilderness around the family home. He wears a bear-like onesie almost all the time, even to school.[2]
  • Megan Mullally as Alyson Lefebvrere, Judy's boss at the photography studio and an artist in her own right.[2]
  • Alanis Morissette as Alanis Morissette, Judy's interpretation of the acclaimed singer and her imaginary friend, and only appears in the Aurora Borealis. Judy often speaks to her for guidance on certain things.[2]

Beef is distraught at the loss of these possessions, as Beef has difficulties letting go of his ex-wife and accepting change. Shortly after, Judy gets a job at the mall; however, the kids don't want to tell Beef because they think he will have a hard time processing the change. Meanwhile, Honeybee confesses that she wants to move into the family's wood cabin. Wolf rejects the idea, telling her that Beef would not take it well emotionally. Beef talks to Judy's boss and finds out about her job. He is distraught, as the children predicted, and wants to stop all the recent changes. To get back to normalcy, Beef tries to find the moose that stole his ex-wife's things to get them back. The family splits up looking for him. When Beef finds the moose, he aggravates it. The whole town is excited for the upcoming Feast of Not People. At the festival, the townsfolk celebrate that they are not cannibals, in contrast to the days when early settlers had to eat each other to survive. However, the famous Cake Lady, who bakes a cake for the celebration each year, is arrested. The cake is the centerpiece of the festival, so Ham decides to become the new Cake Lady to save the day. He keeps this a secret from his family, who worry that without the cake the feast will be a flop. Unfortunately, Ham feels too much pressure and cannot bake. Judy eventually helps him, and they bake a fabulous cake. The two grow closer than ever as siblings. Meanwhile, Wolf tries to impress Beef by running the Cadaver Race at the feast, revealing that he has trained for months. The race goes poorly, but Beef tells Wolf that he is very proud of him, as winning isn't all that matters.

Wolf delegates the party-planning to Ham and Beef, and he takes Moon on a fierce scavenger hunt to find avocados. Meanwhile, Ham and Beef create themed Shrek decorations for the dinner despite neither of them recalling any accurate details about the movie. Throughout all this, Judy interviews Honeybee about Honeybee's complicated past and how she met Wolf. Near the end of the "trading chain", Wolf and Moon have lost their original gift of a couples' massage and only have a box of pears mistaken for avocados. Wolf realizes that Honeybee might not actually like guacamole at all. The time of the event arrives, and Honeybee finds the Shrek decorations humorous, and tells Wolf that she doesn't need gifts to know that he loves her, and that she appreciates grand romantic gestures.
