Syzygium aromaticum is native to the Moluku islands in Indonesia. It is grown in the valleys, hills and slopes, with greater abundance in wetlands. Its common name is clove on, from the Latin clavus, since the dry cocoon unopened remembers this way. The clove has an herbaceous leaf and it is perennial. It is a plant belonging to the family Myrtaceae and has a woody stem. The leaves are simple, opposite, undivided and sinuate, leathery evergreen. The shape of the blade is lanceolate. The leaves are petiolate with a bead in the middle of a lighter colour than the rest. Scattered over the surface of the leaf secretory cavities are full of essential oils, which are translucent backlit. It is a tetrameric plant. The flowers are reddish, actinomorphic and hermaphrodite found in inflorescences which are spikes. Stamens are numerous in several series. It has an inferior ovary. The calyx has four sepals and they are weld, the corolla has four petals and they are weld too. The petals are red, overlapped and small. In young stems, leaves, flowers and fruits are formed secretory cavities where are contained ethereal oils consisting of various types of terpenoids. The ideal environment for the cultivation of clove is tropical and maritime. The buds are dried in the sun or in hot air chambers until they have lost two thirds of its original weight and the colour has faded and acquired a dark brown tone. They are harvested primarily in Indonesia, India, Madagascar, Zanzibar, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. When they are dried they have lost two thirds of their weight and take on a dark colour. Syzygium aromaticum has been used in traditional Chinese and Indian medicine for relieving dental pain or solving digestive problems. The main component of Syzygium aromaticum is eugenol which is found in the oil extracted from cloves; this oil also contains various sesquiterpenes. The eugenol can be toxic in amounts exceeding 5 ml. But it is also antiseptic and analgesic, and in adequate doses is used mainly against toothache. The clove is aromatic and has a delicate flavour. It is used as a seasoning in marinades and sauces, and it is also use as air freshener.
