The men's 400 metre freestyle competition of the swimming events at the 1959 Pan American Games took place on 1 September (preliminaires)[1][2] and 3 September (finals).[3] The last Pan American Games champion was James McLane of US.[4][5][6][7]

This race consisted of eight lengths of the pool, with all eight being in the freestyle stroke.[8]
