Summit Lake

Summit Lake SP is one of the newer parks in Indiana, located just north of Newcastle, Indiana in Henry county. Summit Lake is about 3000 acres in size with an 800 acre lake in the middle. The lake is in a C-shape and most of the recreation is located on the inside of the C. We have a family beach; we’re very much devoted to the lake use here. We have a lot of boating, pleasure boating, fishing. We have a nice family campground, two picnic areas and we have a boat rental. Summit Lake was created from farmland. It was purchased back in the early 1970’s to begin with and took about 10-15 years. It was created from grazed pasture land or cultivated farmland. So when the state took over from the county agency about 25 years ago, they did a lot of work on reforestation. They were planting 60,000 trees a year and then we got a grant from US Fish and Wildlife and we were able to start planting native prairie grasses which came from this area. For a lot of people, and this is one of the hotspots for ice fishing. It’s known all over the Midwest. It’s been written up in a number of magazines: "Outdoor Life", "Field and Stream," for ice fishing here. Also if we get a good snow fall, our trails are wide enough that cross country skiers love to use them. From those of us who work in the great outdoors, we enjoy this every day, but those who work in an office building, work in a school building and such, we’d like to invite you to come out and experience the things we do on a daily basis. We see the birds, wild animals, butterflies and such. It’s just a lovely place to be and we’d love to have you come and join us.
