Staffel (unit)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Staffel is a military organization in German speaking militaries. NATO doctrine recognizes the Staffel as a level of command unique to Germany.[1][2] A staffel is larger than a platoon but smaller than a company.

The NATO map symbol for a staffel is:

Luftwaffe Staffel of the Second World War

A Luftwaffe staffel usually had nine to 12 aircraft. Three or four Staffeln comprised a Gruppe, while a single Staffel was divided into three Schwärme (singular: Schwarm) consisting of four to six aircraft.
