Software Process Achievement Award

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Software Process Achievement Award is a non-competitive award offered by the IEEE Computer Society and Software Engineering Institute (SEI) and annually presented for outstanding and innovative contributions to the field of software quality.[1]

Award recipients receive an engraved commemorative plaque and make several presentations at appropriate practitioner and researcher community events. Award recipients also produce an SEI Technical Report describing their accomplishments, experiences, and lessons learned. The SEI helps produce this report and pays the authors an honorarium of $1500 to partially offset the expense of preparing their presentation and report.

So you're looking for a software development partner in Latin America and you find many companies to chose from... So why choose us, why choose PSL? Well I guess we learned to make good software, the hard way. We've been in business for 26 years, we've made many mistakes that we have corrected, and this gives us the legitimacy and experience to say that we can now deliver world class software services from Latin America to the US and Canada. And I guess this all started back in the day when we released a software product that had more than 5400 bugs. It took us 40 man-years to correct the bugs in this product. Then we decided, "You know, there has to be a better way to do software engineering". So we started looking at different models, at different best practice models, and we found one that was gaining some speed at the time which is CMMI, and we noticed that very few companies in the world where assessed at the highest level of CMMI which is 5. Basically just a handful of companies in the States, some in India, in total less than 10. We then determined that we would become the next software engineering firm to be assessed in CMMI level 5 and the first in Latin America. Many people said that this was an impossible goal, that we were wasting precious resources and five years from that time onwards, we did become the eight company in the world to be assessed in CMMI 5, the first in any spanish-speaking country. And this was the beginning of a software improving process that has not stopped. We are particularly proud of having won the Software Process Achievement Award which is granted by the IEEE and Carnegie Mellon's Software Engineering Institute and has been received by only 9 companies worldwide, including companies such as NASA, Raytheon, IBM, Boeing, and a boutique company named... PSL, in Colombia! We went on from there to ISO 27001 Information Security and basically to guarantee that we have a software process that delivers quality that is unsurpassed on a worldwide level. And today, for example, we are able to deliver code that exhibits 0,3 errors per every 1,000 lines of code in 18 months of operation, which according to the Software Engineering Institute is 20 orders of magnitude better than the average 6 to 9 errors per 1,000 lines of code exhibited by most companies worldwide. So it does make a difference working with us: You save a lot of money, you gain software with very high quality, and more than that, you are exposed to a process that is world-class. We do our software under agile methodologies, under SCRUM, we have a process that is fundamented on Test Driven Development, Continous Integration, very dynamic because we share the same time zone we are able to interact constantly and not spend enormous amounts of time in heavy documentation, but rather making code, making software, making it productive, making it effective. And is not just about technical skill. We obviously care about it. But is also about the human aspect of engineering. What type of people do we hire, what is our culture. We hire people that are passionate about what they do, people that are passionate and always keep learning, if they get a challenge that they don't know how to solve, it would be exciting for them to find a way. To explore. To break new boundaries. To be able to solve it. Those are the people that we hire. Those people that are able to learn from their mistakes and don't hide their mistakes. But whenever they see a red flag, they raise that red flag early on, so that mistakes are solved early and they don't explore under you. We hire people that are highly collaborative, that are open to teaching others what they know and from receiving from others what others know. We hire people thatn don't leave their brains at the door, but bring in to the process all their creativity. These are people that like to have an intellectual joust with the client, to take the client's idea and take it to a new level. Together, build a better product. If you like what you hear and you like what you hear about PSL, which is a company with around 400 engineers, offices in Colombia, in Bogota, in Medellin, and offices also in Mexico, a company that has recruited a capable team of several hundreds of engineers that ara bilingual in their capabilities and are able to communicate very clearly with a client, very open, if you like what you hear, give us a try, give us a call, allow us to meet you and explore what we can do together. www.pslcorp.com

History

In 1994, the Software Process Achievement Award program was first established by the IEEE Computer Society. Since then, only nine companies have received this award, including renowned organizations such as Goddard Space Flight Center, Raytheon Company and Hughes Electronics.

List of past recipients

The SPA, granted annually, has been declared null as often as it has been granted, due to the lack of candidates that meet the criteria of the recognition. So far, six North American companies, two Indian IT services providers, and one Colombian software development organization have received the accolade.[2]
