The Sligo Senior Hurling Championship is an annual Gaelic Athletic Association competition organised by Sligo GAA among the top hurling clubs in County Sligo. The winner qualifies to represent the county in the Connacht Junior Club Hurling Championship, the winner of which progresses to the All-Ireland Junior Club Hurling Championship. Previously, the winners used to compete in the Connacht Senior Club Hurling Championship but were very unsuccessful at that level.

History

Teams

  • Today five teams play in the competition - Coolera/Standhill, Calry/St. Josephs, Western Gaels, Naoimh Eoin and Easkey. Three teams play in the junior championship - Naomh Molaise Gaels, Tourlestrane, the second team of Easkey.

Amalgamations

  • Craobh Rua were a team from Sligo town, but today the town now has two teams, Calry/St. Joseph's and Naoimh Eoin. Several amalgamations of hurling teams in Sligo have happened over the years.
  • Tubbercurry, Curry and Coolaney/Mullinabreena all play under Tourlestrane.
  • Western Gaels comprise Enniscrone/Kilglass and Castleconnor and St. Farnan's.
  • Drumcliffe/Rosses Point and St Molaise Gaels play under Carly/St. Josephs but in recent years St Molaise fielded a team in the junior championship

Format

Group stage

The five clubs start in one group stage. Over the course of the group stage, each team plays once against the others in the group, resulting in each team being guaranteed four group games. Two points are awarded for a win, one for a draw and zero for a loss. The teams are ranked in the group stage table by points gained, then scoring difference and then their head-to-head record. The top three teams in the group qualify for the knockout stage.

Knockout stage

Following the completion of the group stage, the teams from the group are ranked (1-3) in terms of points accumulated and scoring difference. The top team qualifies straight to the final and the next two teams qualify for the semi-final.

Semi-finals: Teams designated 2nd and 3rd from the group stage contest this round. The winner from this game advances to the final.

Final: The group stage winners and the semi-final winner contest the final. The winning team are declared champions.

Relegation

The bottom-placed team from the group stage is relegated to the Sligo Junior Hurling Championship.

Qualification

At the end of the championship, the winning team qualify to the subsequent Connacht Junior Club Hurling Championship.
