It's the King's Soldiers! Run! Run! Run! Capture all of them and bring them! Run! Run! Run! Hey! Hey! What? The King's Soldier's are capturing all our people. We can't let this continue. We won't put up with it. You should go to the Prime Minister. Yes, let's go. Let's all go to the Prime Minister. We will demand justice from him. We want justice! Hari Chandran What is all that commotion Hari Chandran? Shall I find out? No, no, leave it. You don't need to go. Prime Minister! Pattanayak! What is all that commotion Pattanayak? That is what I have come to tell you about. They have congregated outside the castle and are demanding "Justice"! Justice? Why? They say they are being oppressed. Apparently the King's soldiers are capturing them and forcing them to work as slaves in the Karnataka war. But this has always been the law Pattanayak. But today they have rebelled against that law! Poor them. Someone must be riling them. You explain and tell them Pattanayak, What can I do about King Prataprudhra's orders? Let the King return from war, he's bound to do something about it. What if they rebel before then? Pattanayak! Then you will have to suppress them. Pattanayak If necessary you will use your weapons. Politics is quite ruthless. By order of King Prataprudhra, you must go to war! No! We won't accept this. We want Justice! Don't talk back! Go! We want justice! We want justice! Hari Chandran What is your bidding? Let us return home. Even if there has been opression against the untouchables, we are not responsible for that. We don't do anything except follow the King's orders. This fact - This fact we need to explain to them clearly. Their rebellion is against the king. We are just - Adding fuel to this fire of rebellion. If this causes a disaster, then... It will! What if the king finds out? Since I am supposed to worry about everything, then let me worry about this as well? But there is one problem. Their leader has called a meeting. One of you go and find out what this is about. What if they recognise us? In that case, give me some time to think. You may take your leave. Who will listen to you? Are you human beings? Are we not human beings? No no no, you are not human beings. Cows, horses, goats. Humans pet them, touch them. You are like insects in the water. You are untouchables. People lose the status of their caste even if your shadow touches them! Yet we are the ones who have to go to the battlefield and die. Why not? Because that is the only time when you are needed. Without you, who will clear the forest? Who will build the roads? Who will carry the heavy loads on their heads? Who will die in the battlefield? No, we refuse to die. We won't listen to anyone. We will continue to live no matter what. Who will help us? Who do we have? We have no king, no country, not even Lord Jagannath. No no no! Please don't say that. Lord Jagannath is always there for you, even if there is no one else. Don't misunderstand God because of your anger towards mankind. Lies! I won't listen to you anymore. No, we won't listen. You are the king's spy! The king whose spy I am, you have not yet seen that king with your own eyes. He has no weapons in His arms. He has no army with Him. To Him there is no difference between small and big, rich and poor High caste and low caste, Hindu and Muslim. All the pain and suffering, man has inflicted on each other, Has become tears in His eyes. He says only this, that you show Him love, just love. Orissa is indeed going through a bad time. Gopinath, you? My Lord! We meet again. I was waiting for You, all this time, My Lord. This is his house. He is the court pandit of King Prataprudhra, Sarvabhouma Bhattacharya. Sarvabhouma Thakur? You are known all over India for your teachings. I am your servant, ignorant and unfortunate. Well said. I can see You do not have the pride of a newly renounced Sannyasi. Very good. Glory to our Lord! My Lord, You are here, and we are... Sripad, Mukunda, Jagadananda, please offer your obeisances to him... He is knowledge personified, Sarvabhouma Thakur. By his mercy, I have obtained shelter here. Did you come here with them? No sir, we came here with Him. And we will also stay here with Him. That's all fine. For the time being please stay here. And you all know Gopinath, don't you? Yes Sir. We studied together in Nabadwip. Gopinath is my brother-in-law. He will be the one to look after you. Sripad? If he didn't give me shelter today, then... Enough, please do not decieve us anymore my Lord. You made us run all this way and we are starving. Now the truth will come out. What is that? I am saying, did that great man give You shelter, or did You give that great man shelter. What are you doing here? Come inside! What are you saying? He is a Sannyasi. Hmph, Sannyasi? I am the son-in-law of such a great scholar Sarvabhouma Thakur, You are talking to me about a Sannyasi? If they can be a Sannyasi, then I am a Sannyasi as well! Of course. If you are not a Sannyasi, then who is? Including me, you only married sixty times! Listen to her! I am from the highest brahman caste, for me sixty marriages is nothing. And you only look at marriages? Actually, I have maintained the religion of sixty women! But Sannyasi's leave their home. Home? Where is my home? I am also homeless! Oh, is that so? What else? I am here today, there tomorrow and I am always moving. Just moving around. Then you also wear the saffron cloth. Saffron cloth? No, no, I don't do all that nonsense singing and dancing Wearing the saffron cloth like a crazy man and going to people's houses. No, no. Get rid of those fake Sannyasis! Shame, shame on you! Why, what harm has He done to you? You won't understand, you are too old. Amukh! They are my guests. And I am your son-in-law. Fine. If you won't do anything then I will. Fool! Listen, come here. Take for example Amukh. I am embarrased to even call him a son-in-law. I was depending on Gopinath, but I see a change in him also. Oh Gopinath. Where were you? Mahaprabhu's Aarti, I was helping. Mahaprabhu, Mahaprabhu! I don't understand why you call Him Mahaprabhu?! I can see that he is in a state of madness. Not madness - ecstasy. Ecstasy? The person that Sarvabhouma Thakur took from the temple. That madman! Yes, I have become mad. Leave your madness at home! Lower caste, untouchables! They are touching Brahmans! What next? Whose an untouchable? Whose a Brahman? What does that mean? God has created mankind. Mankind has created higher and lower caste, untouchable and Brahman. To God, there is no Brahman and untouchable. They are all the same. There's no difference. Oh really? Everyone's the same? Do you think this is the land of untouchables? No. This is Jagannath's land. This is where man's glory will be established in a new way. This land is Jagannath's temple. Why shouldn't there be untouchables? Come brother, say Hari Bol! Hari Bol! Hari Bol! Hari Bol! That Sannyasi that I saw Who is He? I hear He has come from Bengal. Oh. How Nice. What happened? You stopped? It ended. You seem rather joyous today. Chandrabali, have you seen a Sannyasi near a temple? Yes I have. I hear from Amukh, that He is riling the untouchables, and getting them to join His gang. I don't know. Nevermind. How did you find Him? Find Him? I didn't get to have a good look. Meaning? You mean you saw Him, and were disappointed? Maybe that. Gopinath? Did you call me? Yes, I was thinking of telling you something. It would appear to me, that your Sannyasi does not have knowledge of the scriptures. Why do you say that? Whenever I see you all, you are only singing and dancing in emotion. But for a Sannyasi, it is improper and against the scriptures to dance and sing like this Why? It is said in Srimad Bhagvatam that sankirtan is the same as worship You have not understood the explanation of the Bhagvatam As usual, you have never studied the scriptures. That is why I am saying you should study the scriptures systematically in my school Study the deeper significance of the scriptures. Gopinath, learn to conduct yourself according to the scriptures! Listen. One cannot renounce just by wearing the saffron cloth. One must detach oneself from material objects. Understand? How can there be detachment? Eating and sleeping well, wearing the saffron cloth and dancing like lunatics with both arms in the air. What are you doing?! Facing the west and brushing your teeth? What is the matter with that, Brother? You will be doomed. Why? If you commit a sin, then you will be doomed! What sin did I commit, Brother? What sin? If the Reverend hears of this do you think he will forgive you? But what proof is there that this is a sin? To explain that, I need to describe it in many words. There are nine kinds of proof. For example, perception, inference... Wait, wait, stop! There are ten kinds of proof, not nine. Fool! What did you say?! Fool! You're a fool! According to Smriti Forget your Smriti. Is that a scripture? You are saying the Smriti is not a scripture? No! What are you doing? What are you watching? What are you laughing at? Actions approved by the scripture. Oh! Observe and learn! You know nothing! Where are you going so smartly dressed? I have to go to the temple with Mahaprabhu. Ah Mahaprabhu! You are preoccupied with the temple and chanting. You have seen absolutely nothing of Nilachal. Then let me take you sightseeing. But No buts! I will show you around. Let's go, let's go. What is there to fear? Let's go. Please come. What is there to fear? Please come. As long as I am with you, there is nothing to fear. Please come. The is the man! The ring- leader of the Sannyasis. Bow down before the Prime Minister! It is my great fortune. See how skillfully I managed to bring him here on false pretense? What I have heard of your master has made me very curious. But sir, to be on the safe side, please do not increase your curiosity. And why not? Then you will not be able to discharge your services as a minister! What? Lunatic. You are mad. You talk nonsense! Has your master come on a pilgrimage? Wherever He goes becomes a place of pilgrimage. Is that so? Yes Sir, He has come to distribute the Lord's name. Nonsense! They don't work. Day and night only eating and chanting "Hari Bol, Hari Bol"! Has your master come to distribute the Holy Name among the untouchables? Your honor, he needs them the most. But I also need those untouchables the most. For the needs of war, of the country. But if they begin to sing the Holy Name all day and night with their hands in the air in imitation of others It will cause me a great inconvenience. Tell your master to return where He came from with all His belongings. That was the Prime Minister. Let me give you good advice. For seven days You have been recieving lessons regularly from me, but You have not raised even a single question. You are sitting like a great observer of silence. Why? I was listening quietly. That is fine. But did You comprehend all the points which I explained? Did You understand those lessons that I assigned to You? That I need to know. Yes sir, it was so lucid to us... That is why you have misinterpreted the Vedanta and denied the existence of God Himself. Haven't you heard how the Sruthi describes Him? He is the source of light in all luminous objects. My learning, wisdsom, honour and fame, all in all I offer to You! You are my mantra. You are the God in my thoughts. You are My Sarvabhouma. For your sake I have come to Nilachal. For me? Yes, for you. You demonstrated that devotional love is above all scriptures, all learning and all wisdom. With such praise You will not be able to mislead me. When You have taken everything away from me, then tell me, what course must I take? How will I attain salvation? The course that leads all creatures to salvation is also for you. Chant the Holy Name, only the Holy Name of the Lord. Come, come, this time will never come again, All barriers are broken! Mahaprabhu has brought the Holy Name. What a disaster! It's Sarvabhouma Thakur! A great sin! The king is out of the country... So what if the king is out of the country, we have the Prime Minister! You are right! Let's go at once! I hear about everything from others, so what should I do about it? You are the Prime Minister of the kingdom. If Sarvabhouma goes crazy and carries on singing and dancing with that lunatic and the untouchables, and treats the brahmans and touchables on the same level, then how are we supposed to preserve our high status? He is the court pandit! He guides the whole of society! Yes, that's right! So what can I do about it? Sarvabhouma Thakur is highly respected by the king. When the king returns, he will care of him. But you have to find a suitable solution! Otherwise, all religious activies will go down the drain! I have observed on the astrological forecast that Saturn and Rahu are both in improper positions! It's social revolution. Nobody will obey the brahmans and scholars! Yes! The king is away, you are his representative. Before the fire rages out of control, you put it out! Otherwise Nilachal is doomed! So you are suggesting, for the sake of the kingdom and it's people, this should be stopped immediately? Stop it? Extinguish it completely! Do it and don't delay! Fine. Since this is what all of you wish for, then... For the sake of the kingdom, I have to do everything on behalf of the king. My Lord, Prime Minister Govinda Vidyadhar has informed me through this letter that chanting the names of the Lord will not be allowed in Nilachal. I am going to have a meeting with him. Sripad. My Lord? No one has the right to oppose the chanting of the Lord's names. My main objective is to remove all hindrances. You get prepared, I will go out for kirtan. Pattanayak. Arrest the Sannyasi and bring him to the Devadasi's house! Go! Come Sarvabhouma Thakur, please sit down. I was waiting for you. But I am helpess. This is the king's orders. Kirtan will not be allowed. Moreover, I let them know beforehand. The king has sent this order from the battlefield of Karnataka. King Prataprudhra has sent this order? Yes, Sarvabhouma Thakur! The king himself. He has ordered me to exile from the kingdom those subjects who disobey. King Prataprudhra is a great, pious and popular king. How could he ban the religious practices of his subjects? Alright, let him return from the battlefield and handle it. What if I say he will never return? Will never return? Nobody can say anything about destiny. You cannot sing and dance like that. It is the Prime Minister's order. We cannot obey this ban against the singing and praising of the Lord, Pattanayak. Then I will be compelled to arrest you! You will arrest us? Please do so brother. Just chant the Holy name once! Worthless! Are you not ashamed of returning without success? If I have to arrest so many people, the entire Nilachal will turn into a prison! Then do it! I will turn every house in Nilachal into a prison! Go! Tomorrow early in the morning, you arrest that fake Sannyasi! There is no need for Me to stay in Nilachal, Sripad. Why My Lord? The entire Nilachal is spell bound by the chanting of the Holy Name. The chanting is coming out of the heart of Nilachal. But if the royal opposition grows stronger and oppressive, my Lord? Where the entire population rises up no royal power can oppose it. As the opposition grows strong, the power of chanting the Holy Name will also magnify and deepen. The Holy Name will prevail over everything. In the Holy Name, the welfare of all will be served. Prabhu? You've come to see me so late at night? I was also thinking of You. That is why I came to say goodbye before I leave. Goodbye? I am going to the south. What is this, my Lord? The Holy Name must reach every home in India. But if You leave, what will happen to Nilachal? You will stay here as My representative. You will take to every home in Utkal the religious revolution that has started in Nilachal. You will be the standard bearer of the Holy Name in Utkal. Goodbye Sarvabhouma. Sannyasi? Sannyasi? I am a Devadasi. A simple Devadasi. You are my God. My Lord. Upon your luminous feet, please grant me this, that I may be with God. I saw everything Devadasi. You serve Jagannath as Devadasi, You do not have the right to bow down before anyone else other than Lord Jagannath! For this you must be punished! Punished? Yes! Please do so. But I know, that Mahaprabhu Himself is that very Jagannath. Mahaprabhu, Mahaprabhu! I won't give anyone exemption! All those that are shouting the name of Mahaprabhu, I will punish them severely! Arrest her! The Devadasi will be tried tomorrow. Being the prime Devadasi of the Jagannath temple, For the sake of worshipping an ordinary man, You must be punished for your shameless behaviour! Punishment as promised! From today, I will not consider any "punishment" as punishment You have neglected God, and worshipped a man? In front of these people, you must dance determined and undeterred! I am Jagannath's maid servant. I don't dance in front of anyone else, other than Jagannath! You dare to utter Jagannath's name, using your own sinful mouth? Jagannath, Lord! Twenty-five times! Stop! Stop! Who? Rajguru, Kashi Mishra, sir? What is this you are doing? However much she is guilty, the Devadasi, she is still a woman! That woman has committed a serious crime against the temple and the kingdom. The king will deliberate on that, let the king return first! Then listen, Rajguru. King Prataprudhra will not return! He will not return? No, Rajguru, he will not return. Vidyadhar! King Prataprudhra! Your Majesty! All hail to King Prataprudhra! The men you sent to assassinate me on the battlefield in Karnataka, you will be pleased to hear, that they were my own men! I merely wanted to see how far you would dare to go. Traitor! Your majesty, you are making a mistake! That can be settled later. Arrest him, and take him to prison! Devadasi, You will go to the keeper of the temple of Jagannath. From this moment on, I relieve you of your duties as Devadasi! Listen! Who is it? Oh you come in, come in. No, I cannot. I have abused you all a great deal. I have committed many sins. I cannot go inside. No, no, it doesn't matter, come in, come in. Listen, please forgive me. From now on I will also chant the Holy Name. Singing, dancing, all the things you do, I will do all that! Alright, please come in! Hail Mahaprabhu! All glory to You Mahaprabhu! Your Majesty? You punished Vidyadhar, but the person responsible for all this commotion, Who? Why, the person who is posing as Mahaprabhu in Nilachal? Mahaprabhu? Only Lord Jagannath is Mahaprabhu! But Sarvabhouma Thakur's followers don't believe so. I have called for Sarvabhouma Thakur. I am told the Sannyasi lives in his house. You Majesty, He is disguised as a Sannyasi, a spy from Gour! Spy? I hear that a Sannyasi from Gour has taken shelter in your house? And within the untouchables... He has spread the Holy Name! But people are saying that the Sannyasi, along with the untouchables, Are conspiring in Gaupal. And your house is the centre of this conspiracy. People aren't saying that. Vidyadhar and his followers are the ones saying that. Where is that Sannyasi? He has left Nilachal and gone. Left? Or ran away? Fearing whom would be run away? No fear can touch him! That conspirator has no fear at all? No. He is God in human form. In order to rescue the downtrodden, He has descended! He is my cherished God, my Supreme One! He is everything to me! You are the best teacher of Vedanta in India! Have you gone mad? Where is your cherished God? He has gone to the south on a pilgrimage. I want to see Him. This enigma! Sumantra! Your Majesty? Take your weapons and go South! Bring back news of the Sannyasi no matter what! And listen, along the way at Vidyapur, regarding all my policies, tell Roy Ramananda He has come to Nilachal. He is waiting for you. He has come here? You have come at a good time, Roy Ramananda. I was compelled to come, your Majesty. Why? Is there any trouble in the kingdom? No, your Majesty. Through your blessings, This humble governor of yours has not neglected state affairs. Then? I have come to you with a very personal request. Please take a seat, Ramananda. You are not just a governor under me. I respect you as a friend, as a scholar, as a humourist. I know, your Majesty. On the basis of that friendship, I appeal to you, Please relieve me from the administrative responsibility of state affairs. What are you saying, Ramananda? You are my principal power in the south. How can I relieve you? I no longer enjoy administrative duties. Lately whenever I am seated in meditation, the face of a beautiful Sannyasi appears before my eyes. One day I found that Sannyasi standing at my door. He said, "I have come for you from Nilachal, Ramananda". "I want you". From Nilachal? Is He that Sannyasi from Gour? Yes your Majesty. He is the one I am looking for! I want to see what are his powers! I want to see what is his allure! He has taken away Sarvabhouma from me. He has also taken you away from me! He has renounced me in my own kingdom! Where is that Sannyasi? He has left Vidyapur and is on His way alone to the south. But why have you not arrested Those who have disobeyed your orders? I will do just that. I will arrest Him! He who has undermined my power in my own kingdom! He who has masqueraded as God, and riled my subjects! So I understand, you are thinking of Him all the time. Even in the night, you say His name in your dreams. What did you say? Why? I have heard myself. You have heard? Yes! You have heard. Yes. Every night, He is in my dreams! If I ever see Him, I will arrest Him for crimes against the kingdom! Yes, yes I will arrest Him! You give us the order, We will go to perform kirtan in the town again. Let us see how much king Prataprudhra can oppress us! Look at this! Needlessly getting all excited. Did you hear what King Prataprudhra said? He does not want to catch insignificant folk like you and me, He wants to catch Mahaprabhu outright! I think that Prataprudhra has well and truly gone mad! You may say that, since you know him better than most. He wakes up in shock at the sound of kirtan, And orders unmindful citizens to arrest Mahaprabhu! Plot

Born under a Neem tree and hence also called Nimai, Vishvambar (Bharat Bhushan) is the second son of Jagannath Mishra and his wife Sachi Devi. Due to his fair colour, he is often referred to as Gaurang (Fair-coloured). The social milieu in the 15th century setting of the story is shown as being dismal, with hypocritical priests and oppressive rulers. He loses his father at an early age and the family faces hardships financially. Nimai completes his education and is an expert at debating with the local priests. He starts a school and marries Vishnupriya, daughter of Sanatan Misra who is the court priest. On his father's death anniversary he goes to Gaya to perform prayers for his father. There, he meets a saint called Ishvara Puri. He soon develops complete devotion to Krishna and starts chanting and singing his praises. His Radha and Krishna Bhakti (devotion) songs attract people from all walks of life. He takes renunciation and shaves his head. He settles in Puri, concentrating on his Bhakti and disappears while singing a bhajan. Dhananjay Bhattacharya sang in a wonderful and rich voice "Hari Hari Bol, Mukund Madhav Govind Bol".
