On our show today are a team of husband and wife heavyweights in China's world of sports. By heavyweight, I don't mean big in body size like me. But the medals they've earned are of heavyweight importance. So who are they? Let us take a look at the big screen. >> SHOW NAME- AMAZING COUPLES Winter Olympic Champions returns home! First media interview since their win. Revealing their life stories and path to Olympic glory. On the quadruple jump SHEN fell on the ice, for half a day I could not get up. Perseverance in life, will lead to success. Now let us welcome our pair of guests today- Shen Xue, Zhao Hongbo Welcome welcome Please have a seat >> Thank you Another round of applause to welcome them for coming. Great pleasure to be here Since you guys are here, can you let our audience get excited once more? Of course we wouldn't be able to let you skate here. But that thing of yours, that thing that thing that thing, did you bring it here? SHEN: Gold Medal? >> Yes. May we see the real medal? Many people have already worn this medal. >> Oh yeah? As a gift we gave it to our coach to wear, team doctors, many people. >> SHEN: Many people have helped us. No TV host has worn it yet right? >> SHEN: Yeah that's correct. Let me wear it first for a bit. Try it on. Weights quite a bit, really! Get a close up with the camera At first glance looks just like a lotus leaf >> ZHAO: I heard Canada is quite concerned about recycling. I heard someone said the medals are made from waste materials of cell phones. Also someone said it is made from wood Wood is the material. That's impossible, this is so heavy. >> SHEN: And the engraving patterns are unique with each medal, every medal is different. It symbolizes high praise. Worth way more than a big piece of gold. Thank you to both of you. I too have gotten an eye opening experience. Alright please have a seat. >> SHEN: Okay. As you guys know about my son, He is learning ice hockey. >> ZHAO: He plays ice hockey. Figure skating is somewhat related to ice hockey. From what I know about you guys, just like my son, did you start at a very young age? Yes. We started when we were six years old, to learn how to skate. BOTH of you started when you were six? Yes. Both started from six years old. But you weren't six years old during the same year. But it's true that both started at six years old. Then you put on a little pair of skates, and stepped on the ice. >> ZHAO: I remember at that time it was at an outdoor rink. >>HOST: Wow how cold. At Harbin's 8th region. Everywhere skated was at outdoor rinks. The place was minus 30 degrees Celsius outside. That year it got even colder. >> HOST: Those were the conditions that you started with? SHEN: Yes. Not only was it cold, sometimes there was also wind. When you pushed a step forward, the wind could blow you right back. But those were rough times you had to endure. >> SHEN: Yes. Rolling somersaults was unavoidable. I had a different partner in the past, practicing pairs, her name is Xie Mao Mao. We got 1st place at the 7th annual national championships. >>HOST: 7th annual, that was many years ago. ZHAO: Yes. And then the girl because of health reasons. >>HOST: She retired? ZHAO: Yes, she retired. >>HOST: She dumped you and made you single. That's when "Little" Xue appeared. At that time coach Yao brought along just Xue? or a bunch of girls to let you choose? >> ZHAO: That time it was 4 choose 1. Aww man he really brought a bunch?! >> ZHAO: I was finally a lucky guy. >> HOST: (Pretending to be young ZHAO) Come have a seat, let me take a look at you. >>ZHAO: haha no, that would be out of line. Back then little Xue wasn't the best out of those 4. Another girl was supposed to be picked. HOST: Which aspect are you referring to that wasn't best? >>ZHAO: From a skills standpoint. HOST: I thought you were talking about she wasn't the prettiest. >>SHEN: In fact not the prettiest. >>SHEN: Then what happened? HOST: So why was she chosen? Not the most skillful nor the prettiest. Our coach would examine athletes, their parents, body type and build, her parents cannot be very tall. If they are very tall, and she ends up growing tall also, that would become very strenuous on me. >>HOST: You won't be able to lift her. ZHAO: Also cannot be too chubby. Parents cannot be too chubby. >>HOST: Alright I get it, There's no way my daughter would make it. Right. While scouting our coach really made careful considerations, and taking everything into account. >>HOST: So it was totally by chance, and no other factors were involved in the decision process. >>HOST: And picked her. ZHAO: Yes. I believe at the time, it was just like fate. Pairs figure skating is a sport on ice with strength and grace combined. Male athletes are demanded to be in good shape with power, so they can complete numerous throws and lifts throughout their routines. Elite female athletes are agile, able to keep up with steps and speed of their male counterparts. Striking the perfect balance between strength and elegance. If her weight increased, can you tell by feeling with your hands? Coach will just look at my face, and be able to see whether I got fatter or skinnier. Zhao Hongbo would grab my waist, since performing the twist lift he would grab me by my waist. Once we do that move >>HOST: (pretending to be ZHAO) Board seems a bit big. We must do that move in practice. Once we do it, He'll be like, "hmm a bit fat there." >>HOST: So what do you do? SHEN: Lose the weight... We've seen another pair Zhang Dan, Zhang Hao at the 2006 Olympics, where they had a devastating fall. Have you ever had anything like that? Actually when I was doing the quad, I also fell very hard, even harder than hers. That is when I fell on the ice, for half a day I couldn't get up. Then I couldn't even breathe. >>ZHAO: It's like falling and feeling like you are in a spasm, where you can neither inhale nor exhale. Because when you've just fallen, usually you can't get up right away. Need to lay on the ice for a while, regain my vitality, only then you are able to move the body So once I am able to breathe again or felt somewhat recovered, he'll finally pick me up and carry me off the ice. >>HOST: Oh pick you up that will feel a lot better. In order to do a quadruple-throw jump, knowing once you've taken off, you'll fall extremely hard but little Xue still does it, time and time again. I feel this spirit has motivated even ourselves and urged me to say we need to go all out for our target of the Olympics. That was during the 2002 Olympics, which felt like a tough battle because the gold medal was within our reach, so it was time to go for that gold medal. Through their unbelievable courage and perseverance, and gruesome training, Shen Xue & Zhao Hongbo were successful in learning a quad-throw jump, a feat no pair in the world has completed. At the 2002 SLC Winter Olympics Shen & Zhao became the first pair, to attempt a quad-throw jump at an international competition. Though their attempt was not successful, and they received bronze medals, it was the first ever medals for Chinese pairs skating at the Olympics. >>HOST: Thank you for staying with us. This quad was actually already completed, but just when I was overflowed with joy, I fell again. >>HOST: It wasn't a failure on the actual element. >>ZHAO: According to the current judging system she was already skating for a meter this element is considered completed. >>SHEN: Completed. Her fall should have been deducted from general skating. She held the landing edge long enough already. >>HOST: Got too excited. SHEN: However, back then it still wasn't, the new judging system was not yet in-place, it was another scoring [old 6.0] system. >>HOST: In the end it wasn't ratified. >>SHEN: Yea. ZHAO: Yea, really a shame. >>HOST: I want to ask this, when you two first started, she was an "adopted" little girl, small team member, practicing along with an "older brother", did what she was told. When did you begin to sense she gradually became an equal member of the team. >>SHEN: Equal. And not the relationship of a coach/student, or older brother/younger sister. >>ZHAO: Wow, we experienced a lot. through kinds of rough experiences like this, I slowly began to sense little Xue was growing up, she also changed. I remember one time, which left me with a lasting impression, our whole team of athletes were at a banquet for closing ceremonies, little Xue was wearing a red evening gown dress. Because there was a banquet after each competition, boys would wear suits, and girls would wear evening gowns. >>HOST: Very formal. ZHAO: Yes. When I saw Xue at the elevator, I thought she had transformed she became more feminine, also very pretty. >>HOST: Sparkling before your eyes. ZHAO: Yes. Because we've spent so much time together, As our coach said, "Aside from sleeping, you'll always be together." >>HOST: At the 2003 World Championships, I heard Xue was injured at that time. >>SHEN: Yes. We've already arrived at Washington, USA, at the competition practices, again practicing a quad-throw jump, but after the landing, My right foot and ankle (was hurt), >>HOST: Did you hear a loud sound inside? No, when I got off the ice, there was huge swelling, so after putting on my blade guards and walking towards to locker room, after taking a few steps, I couldn't even walk. >>HOST: Just got off the ice and couldn't walk?! I was thinking it wasn't a big deal, but that wasn't the case when I got back to the hotel room. pretty much I couldn't get any sleep for the night. I was sharing a room with another girl. She also had an upcoming competition, I was afraid to disturb her rest. I went in the bathroom and made a bed there with towels. Rolled up another towel as my pillow. Also had an ice pack, because my leg was in excruciating pain, felt like being pierced by needles, a pulsing type of pain. >>ZHAO: It was swelling really bad. SHEN: Yea So while I was icing my foot, I read some magazines and tried to fall alseep, that's how I spent the night. In the end we came up with a solution have injections to make my foot numb, that way my foot would have no feeling. I can do whatever movements, and wouldn't feel any pain at all. Despite the swollen foot being in skates, you wouldn't feel any pain. In total I had 5 injections, from the practices to the competition. Because I was no longer in pain. Moreover, I couldn't feel anything that's below my knee, in the lower leg area there was no feeling at all. After the first injection, I was skating in practice I was wobbling on the ice, I couldn't stand steady since I had no feeling. So I told Zhao you have to hold me tight, since I can't balance properly. 2003 World Figure Skating Championships in USA Shen Xue battled severe injuries and stepped on the ice with an injection to her foot and sheer determination won the event and repeated as World Champions. Just like that you captured the World Champion title >>SHEN: Yes ZHAO: I remember the second day in the States I carried Xue on my back, taking turns with Zhang Hao that was stupid at the time, we should have pushed her in a wheelchair. when she had an injured leg. >>HOST: No no no, it was a good idea to carry her Carrying her along, to see the white house We wanted to see it since we were in Washington anyway. Touring America on piggyback. Hongbo did something similar that's even more famous you won't be able to carry her this time around. You ruptured your achillies tendon back then how did that happen? >>ZHAO: We were training in Yunnan It happened with a jump, during the jump it suddenly ruptured. >>HOST: Oh no you ruptured the whole thing. Were you able to hear it? ZHAO: No I did not hear any sound. >>HOST: I heard someone say you can hear it when a tendon ruptures. It was through skates, Also during takeoff of the jump, >>SHEN: The toe pick >>HOST: Which already made a sound SHEN: Yes Your foot was dangling right then? >>ZHAO: Yea At the time I was in fear more than anything not saying I am afraid of pain, but at that moment suddenly felt I've lost everything, like I'm at my wit's end (helpless). Because we've always taken preventive measures many people say once a ruptured has occurred there would be no chance to compete at Olympics. That's what I was afraid of most at the time. >>HOST: And it really happened. ZHAO: Really happened. SHEN: I was struck with the flu that day, and was not at the ice rink. I was sleeping in my room also my forehead was a little dizzy. Then the team staff knocked on my door and said "Pack your bags and go back to Beijing" I ran out the door to ask what happened. He said Zhao Hongbo ruptured his tendon. Then I went back in the house and thought Originally I had a flu and felt dizzy plus the fact he said Hongbo ruptured his tendon, I felt.... >>HOST: You were going to faint. SHEN: Yea and my mind was going blank. >>HOST: You've prepared long and hard for the Olympics how long was it till the next games? Just a little more than six months. >>HOST: How long does it typically take for a tendon to grow back in place? Six months’ time. For most people, they can resume activities after 6 months' time, with small movements. >>ZHAO: Running and jumping. Let us briefly explain to our audience what are tendons, basically.... *talks about Beef Tendon (Chinese food dish)* S/Z: Yes Human tendon was snapped. There's not much blood flow surrounding tendons so the recovery process is especially slow. There's a chance of rupturing it again within 6 months. 2nd rupture is common amongst people for just going down the stairs you could rupture it with one wrong step. Once I finished packing up in my room He was waiting for me in the car, with his leg elevated once I got in the car, didn't care about anyone watching the two of us hugged and cried we couldn't stop crying out loud and didn't care about our surroundings. ZHAO: In pairs skating, without me she's basically handicapped and disabled. >>SHEN: In pairs, just like a pair of chopsticks if one breaks, you are only left with one chopstick. >>HOST: You can't eat a meal. SHEN: Yes That's even worse than a fork. Then what was there to do after crying? go back for rehabilitation? SHEN: Took the next flight back to Beijing. When you were crying, was your heart saying the Olympics was over? SHEN: Yes, that was the feeling. And kept thinking, "Olympics were over". Back in Beijing, Doctor Tian De Xiang should say he immediately gave me hope. He said, "Little fellow, no need to be scared or anxious." "I will definitely make you stand within 6 months." That's what Doctor Tian said. >>HOST: Standing up is big difference than being able to jump. At the time I felt an array of hope like a thin grass in the pond and I grasped it. Someone gave me hope. Many people helped me during that period, also fans and friends of skating, they made paper cranes and lucky stars wishing for my speedy recovery. Team's medical staff and doctors gave special attention and care for me. including our coach staff, they attended to my bedside during night shifts, which helped prevent any reinjures. >>HOST: Xue didn't have anybody to practice with, Why not take some time off and tend to him? She was even more heart broken than I was. Sometimes I've lost track of how many times she cried in her room. Because those were truly challenging times. But in front of me were even more of her smiles. >>HOST: Forced smile. ZHAO: Yup, I am able to feel it. Maybe it was during that period, that our personal relationship was able to blossom. >>HOST: No doubt, true love tested through tough times. Hongbo was able to rely on many people for help, of those perhaps Xue was the most important one. Only then he was able pick himself back up. How long was this after the accident? S/Z: 4 months later. ZHAO: My leg was still in a cast. all the way up to my thigh. I had to wait 15 days to take the cast off. I said, "No way, I won't last 3 days." I asked them to give me a shorter cast. Had a good talk with the doctor, "You must change it for me." Because it was itching too much inside the cast. There was alcohol left over from the surgery, and the cast was applied right on top. the skin was almost peeling off. So I took a chopstick to scratch my leg, but the skin was still feeling really uncomfortable. Muscles was also shrinking at a rapid pace >>HOST: That's the key problem. ZHAO: Yes it was shrinking. Then my leg became really small. If I don't use any strength at all within 3 days my leg was becoming small fast. >>HOST: Just 3 days!? ZHAO: I said no way, and talked to the doctor fitted with a smaller one, so at least I can exercise my own leg a bit. Then within a week I started training core, back, and upper body strength. >>HOST: You were off ice for 4 months, did you still know how to skate? ZHAO: Just like I was drunk, really. Basically it was that feeling, I was floating. This leg had many protective mechanism applied. Many layers of taping which made it really stiff. Normally it takes us 5 minutes to tie a pair of skates since we are already used to it. It took him half an hour to lace up his skates His tendon was not very solid at all. >>HOST: That's to be expected. SHEN: So I pressured him to jump. >>HOST: Aren't you afraid he'll reinjure himself? Well it was really close to the Olympics, we were going in one week. ZHAO: Yes. SHEN: My thinking was this if you cannot do this element (3T) you won't be competing for the Olympic gold. >>HOST: Just like you didn't even go. SHEN: Then what's the point of going? Might as well not go at all. >>HOST: What was he saying? He was afraid of doing that jump, popping left and right. I was standing there watching him jump I finally said play our program music. Each attempt, one popped jump I said play the music again, try one more time. Another pop, keep trying. >>HOST: Popped so he didn't even do the move? It was a triple, he stopped at two revolutions. ZHAO: I also fell a few times. SHEN: Fell a few times. >>ZHAO: Those falls made her anxious. There were 6-7 people at the rink, lined up by the boards with lots of people looking on. Aside from her screaming, "Play the music" everyone else was absolutely silent. my falls made her angry and pissed her off. I said, "If my break my foot again, I'll kill you all." >>HOST: You said it, kill them all. ZHAO: Yup SHEN: I said, "Alright, you foot's not broken now" "Then you keep jumping." She's more ruthless than me. Then both of us continued to jump We did end up landing the jumps. ZHAO: Yes we landed it once that day. 2005 AUG - Hongbo Ruptured Tendon in Training Finally on Olympic ice in Torino Hongbo skated gingerly on his injured foot This fortitude and determination was a moving performance witnessed by all. An elegant and remarkable performance captured their 2nd Olympic Bronze Medals >>HOST: I remember after the Torino Olympics a lot of rumors about you guys in the newspaper and media. describing you two as "couple on ice". At the time have you already made public about your relationship? >>ZHAO: Nothing really in 2006. What about just between the two of you? Did either of you confess your love? >>ZHAO: In a sense yes. >>HOST: Ah playing guessing games with us. >>SHEN: I felt the two of us back then after the Olympic Games about 2-3 days after honestly we believed we would turn Pro after Torino Olympics. but another 2-3 days passed. Hongbo "Big Bro" and I decided together to go for one more year. >>HOST: One year, or an Olympic cycle? SHEN: One year. ZHAO: So in 2007, I proposed to "Little" Xue. >>HOST: Did he tell you anything in advance or know he'll have a surprise for you on the ice? >>SHEN: Nope, I had no idea. Shen Xue, Zhao Hongbo, experienced together suffering, setbacks, joy, winning and losing, their path of love finally came to fruition. At the 2007 World Figure Skating Championships upon conclusion of their long program Zhao Hongbo kneeled on one knee, and proposed to Shen Xue. >>ANNOUNCER: China Athletes, Well-known world class competitors Shen Xue, Zhao Hongbo 2-time World Champs, 2-time Olympic Bronze In the same year, this ice couple finally revealed plans of their marriage. Describe for me the personalities of each other. >>ZHAO: I think we are both introverts. >>SHEN: He's the type who never gives up. and strives for perfection. He always has high expectations of me, sometimes I think to myself maybe I am still not doing good enough. >>HOST: You ever thought about, "Why I have such bad luck to team up with this guy?" So what kind of person is Xue? >>HOST: You mentioned she was docile and obedient. Did she develop a bit of a temper? When I was boss, we haven't started going out. Just like the preparations for Torino, she was really vicious. A normal person wouldn't be able to withstand that. >>HOST: Didn't know there was that side of her. We do have arguments at times. >>HOST: You do? Like the competitions this past season. We put a lot of pressure on ourselves. >>SHEN: Just before the Olympics. Well because of a very minor element, kept practicing but couldn't do it well. Really worried. I was worried, she was worried. When we were going home >>SHEN: Got off the ice, have yet to eat >>SHEN: He said let's go eat, I said no and went back alone. >>HOST: So angry that you won't even eat? SHEN: Won't eat. SHEN: And then.... did you eat by yourself then? >>ZHAO: I brought back take away food. >>SHEN: Oh yeah he brought me food. Then came over to my place. He came in and I was in the washroom. He knocked on the washroom door and said, "Come out! Do you want wage 'War'?" >>HOST: North-eastern people refer to fights as wars. SHEN: Yea, "Come out and fight", he said. Then he took off his sweater, threw it on my bed, and pulled up his sleeves He walked over and said, "So, you want to fight?" Pissed me off, then he lowered his head and bowed, "Alright you can hit me." - Zhao said. >>HOST: I heard when you've teamed up for a long time. You can tell what the other person is thinking, by the expression in their eyes, small movements. is it that superhuman? We don't need to talk, two of us can take a look at each other, And I know what he is about to do. In another instance, He's got a lot on his mind, and he'll say something different I'll say, "Stop talking, I know what you want to say." >>HOST: We will give a live test for you guys. There's a clipboard in front of you and a piece of paper. I'll ask a few questions, Without looking at each other, answer a few questions okay? >>HOST: Question 1, Shen Xue's expression when she's mad. >>ZHAO: When she's mad. HOST: Don't say it out, write it on your own. >>HOST: You are peaking! Finished? Alright show your answers. ZHAO: I won't peak, I won't peak. >>HOST: We'll look at yours first. Making a long mouth. >>HOST: Let's see how Shen Xue answered. >>SHEN: Not the same. What he said was my habit back when I was a child. >>HOST: What are you like now as an adult? SHEN: Cry and talk at the same time. >>ZHAO: Totally not in sync. Question 2, Habits of a mad Zhao Hongbo? >>HOST: Be more in sync! NO DISCUSSION! ZHAO: When I am mad.... >>HOST: For me I like to throw things, throw the pillows in our house. >>HOST: NO DISCUSSION! SHEN: Usually when he keeps talking about elements, >>SHEN: That will make me angry. I'll be mad first, so I wouldn't pay attention when he is mad. >>HOST: Let's take a look at Xue's answer. "Will not talk." >>ZHAO: Not in harmony again. Hongbo's answer: "Pacing back and forth." >>HOST: Like a Lion trapped in a cage. ZHAO: I'll be walking at my place, she won't be able to see anyway. Q: If a disagreement occurs. Who will back down first and how? >>HOST: This question seems easier. How do you make up? Who gives in first usually? >>HOST: Just write it down. Why make it so complicated? Alright let's see both your answers! >>ZHAO: "I MUST!", is what I wrote. SHEN's answer: "HIM!" >>HOST: They are finally in harmony for once. ZHAO: Finally in harmony. >>ZHAO: Normally I'll cheer her up. HOST: Quite good to marry this kind of "Big Bro". >>HOST: Right or wrong, he'll come cheer you up. >>HOST: Is that the method? Cheer her up? >>ZHAO: Also buy presents. >>SHEN: I can't really get mad at him. Sometimes I pretend to be mad. ZHAO: Oh you were tricking for presents! Now you tell the truth. Should have come on your show earlier. SHEN: Other times he'll be like, "One, two, three, LAUGH!" Then I can't hold my laughter. But if I can pass that stage, He'll be like, "tickle tickle" Which I also cannot hold my laughter. So I really can't get mad at him. Q: Which animal/insect is Little Xue most afraid of? Can we just say this? 1, 2, 3, say it. S/Z: Mouse. ZHAO: Little Xue is most afraid of mouse. One time we were training in Tai Huang Island. We found a mouse at the hotel, it was really small, like this size. She was standing on the bed. >>HOST: That's not small! >>ZHAO: She was screaming When I arrived, she was standing on the edge. She was like, "ahhhhhh!!!" >>HOST: And what did you do about the situation? Did you kill it by stomping on it? >>ZHAO: I was really scared too. I opened the door and called for help. "Hurry up, come hit this thing!" I heard Xue wrote a love letter while in Vancouver. >>SHEN: That's not called a love letter. HOST: Then what is it called? >>SHEN: Because Feb14-15 were the competition dates. Feb14 so happens to be Valentines' Day. >>HOST: "So happens?" It just is! It was also the first portion of our competition, the Short Program. So just before that, I wrote him a greeting card. >>HOST: Did you bring it? Want to read it out? >>SHEN: So I wrote, Dear hubby Hongbo, Wish you Happy Valentine's Our feelings are the most complicated, during this year's Valentines' but we've already done everything we can, already sacrificed what was necessary, We have no regrets, no matter the results. Let's happily face everything that's about to come, happily spend each year's Valentines' Day. good luck, good luck, continual good luck Your loving wife, Xue 2010 Feb14 Olympic Village >>HOST: Shen Xue said something back in 2007. "We already have everything, we can chase our dreams of Olympic Gold at the Winter Olympics." Now that you've earned this gold medal. Do you still have dreams? >>ZHAO: Another starting point has begun, to provide something in figure skating for China's next generation. >>SHEN: We are only retiring from competition, but we won't retire from figure skating. Our accomplishments throughout the years, are developed by the state (China). they met numerous conditions for us. >>SHEN: This is something you cannot do in other countries. >>ZHAO: I think especially for figure skating, needs enormous backing from the powerful state. Since in America and Europe, figure skating is believed to be a luxurious sport for the rich. Take our costumes for example, the design and tailoring are made to be exceptionally gorgeous. Then music for our programs also require editing and mixing to finest details. All these requires significant amount of money as backing. >>HOST: So from now on, you would like to do more to give back to the country. >>ZHAO: Yes that's how I feel. SHEN: The state has provided us with many years of support. Some of those things are visible, some are not visible. including medical staff, scientists, many people are serving one athlete. When we received our gold medals, we also said this during on-site interviews. >>ZHAO: What we said most was our gratitude. This gold medal doesn't just belong to the two of us, it belongs to the world of figure skating, as well as paying back everyone who has contributed to our programs and journey. It is the wish of everyone. What was most lucky for us, is to be able to step on this stage. to fulfill this destiny. >>HOST: Well said! >>HOST: This is a splendid change of stage for you beginning a new journey. We give you our blessing. S/Z: Thank you. I think you still have another dream, which you haven't told us yet, you should have a child. Is that in your plans? >>ZHAO: Next year, perhaps. >>HOST: You guys will succeed for sure. because the lucky star is already following you. If and when you have a son or daughter, would you allow them to be involved in figure skating? >>SHEN: I think so, first we'll let them try. then provide guidance in that direction. In our house we already have kids figure skating boots. >>ZHAO: We have it all ready. >>HOST: We originally prepared a small gift for you, and that's a pair of skates. Would like to give it to your future children, but if you've already prepared your own, it makes us seem a little redundant, do you still want them? >>SHEN: Yes, I want them. Yup. >>HOST: Then let us give them to you. Here, let's open it up, Thank you. Looks great. >>ZHAO: Thank you thank you. >>SHEN: Perfect, the pair at our place are black, prepared for a boy. Your pair of white will be perfect for a girl. >>HOST: Boys wear black, girls wear white. >>HOST: How about this, let's make a pact. For a girl, >>SHEN: Will do figure skating. >>HOST: For a boy I'll give another pair of hockey skates. >>S/Z: Thank you. >>HOST: At the end of the show, we still have one more present. It's a tradition on our show "Amazing Couples". to give you a love ring which has a magic spell. Hope as husband, Zhao Hongbo will put it on his wife Shen Xue. >>HOST: We hope you can put it on in a special way. Normally the husband can say something romantic. Or if you have any other ideas, that would be even better. >>ZHAO: What else can I do? HOST: Or you can sing her a romantic song. >>ZHAO: I haven't sang in a long time. He rose to prominence with a gold medal-winning performance at the 1978 Asian Games, breaking the games record for the javelin with his throw of 79.24 m (259 ft 11+12 in) to beat Japan's best athlete, Toshihiko Takeda. This made him the first Chinese man to win that title, building on the success of his female counterpart Mao Jiajou in 1974.[1] The following year he defeated Toshihiro Yamada in Tokyo by over eight metres to take the gold medal at the 1979 Asian Athletics Championships. Again this was a championship record and a first win for a Chinese athlete, and was also a new Asian record. Reflecting growing national prowess in the discipline, Li Xia also won the women's event that year.[2]

China's 1980 Olympic boycott meant that Maomao did not get the opportunity to compete at the highest international stage. He did compete at the alternative Liberty Bell Classic event held in the United States and was a clear winner with a throw of 89.12 m (292 ft 4+12 in).[3] This throw would have been sufficient to earn him an Olympic medal at the 1980 Moscow Games.[4] The mark was far in excess of his previous best and represented another Asian record for the Chinese thrower.[5] A former Chinese national record, it remains the best mark ever set by a Chinese with the old javelin design. Among Asian athletes, only Kazakhstan's Viktor Yevsyukov (then competing for the Soviet Union) threw further.[6]

Shen's last major competition was the 1981 Asian Athletics Championships and he successfully defended his title against Japanese opposition in Tokyo. This made him the first athlete to win that title twice. That year shot putter Mohammed Al-Zinkawi and Shigenobu Murofushi were also repeat throws champions.[2]

His career best of 89.12 m in Philadelphia is also reported as being 89.14 m (perhaps due to the difference in converting imperial measurements).[7] His highest global ranking came with this mark, at twelfth for the 1980 season.[8] His throw of 80.48 m (264 ft 12 in) to win at the 1979 National Games of China was the record for the old javelin throw implement.[9]
