Development

In late December 2021, Sivakarthikeyan, who used to work with director Rajkumar Periyasamy in private Tamil channels and collaborated for many projects and shows, was reported to join hands with the latter for his directorial venture after his debut film Rangoon (2017). Production was reportedly set to begin after the actor completes his project with director Madonne Ashwin, which became Maaveeran (2023).[1] Raaj Kamal Films International, headed by Kamal Haasan and R. Mahendran, and Sony Pictures Films India, headed by Vivek Krishnani, publicly announced the project on 15 January 2022, through their respective social media accounts. Tentatively titled #SK21, either Harris Jayaraj, Anirudh Ravichander or G. V. Prakash Kumar were reported to be in consideration to score the music.[2][3] A muhurat puja was held on 5 May at the headquarters of Raaj Kamal Films International in Chennai with the presence of the film's cast and crew. The presence of Prakash Kumar, production designer Rajeevan, cinematographer CH Sai, editor R. Kalaivanan and action director Stefan Rrichter, revealed their inclusion to the technical crew.[4][5]

Casting

Rashmika Mandanna and Sai Pallavi were reported to be in consideration for the lead actress role.[6] Pallavi was announced by the production house on 9 May 2023, pairing opposite Sivakarthikeyan, for the first time.[7] Lallu was cast in a pivotal role, in his second collaboration with Periyasamy after Rangoon.[8] Rahul Bose was confirmed to play the main antagonist in the film, collaborating with both Sivakarthikeyan and Periyasamy for the first time.[9] During the shooting in Pudicherry, a leaked picture of Sivakarthikeyan, Sai Pallavi and said-so daughter in the film was uploaded to social media. Which revealed that Sivakarthikeyan would play the role of a father, and Pallavi would play the role of a mother in the film.[10]

Filming

Principal photography began with the first schedule on 5 May 2023 in Kashmir.[11] However, the shooting was halted a few days later, due to an ongoing event there.[12] Filming then resumed by 22 May.[13] The schedule concluded by 1 September, with a working day of 75 days.[14] The second schedule began in Chennai on 21 October.[15] On 9 November, the filming continued in Pondicherry.[16] Shooting resumed in Puducherry by late November. By then, 80–percent of filming was reportedly completed.[9]

Music

The music and background score is composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, in his maiden collaboration with Sivakarthikeyan and Rajkumar.[12]
