Rio Grande (shanty)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rio Grande is a sea shanty of the nineteenth century, traditionally popular amongst American and British crews. The title refers to the Rio Grande, which forms much of the border between Mexico and the United States. It was included in the 1894 work Studies in Folk-song and Popular Poetry by Alfred Williams.[1] There are a variety of different lyrics. The song possibly dates from the Mexican–American War when large numbers of troops and sailors were deployed to the area.
