The HR is a family of straight-3 and straight-4 automobile engines co-developed by Nissan (Aichi Kikai) and Renault. Renault calls it the H engine. There are two basic designs with 72.2 mm (2.84 in) bore resp. 78 mm (3.07 in) bore diametre. The smaller engines are available as 3-cylinders with a displacement of 0.9 L or 1.0 L (999 cc), 4-cylinders at 1.2 L (1,198 cc) or 1.33 L (1,332 cc) (4-cylinders also with direct injection). There are rumors about a 0.8 litre 3-cylinder in India. In the list below the HRA2DDT and HR13DDT are the only engines from this small design.

The below mentioned HR10DDT, HR10DE, HR12DE and HR12DDR are part of the bigger design.

DDT series


The HR10DDT is a 1.0 L (999 cc) dual direct injected, supercharged, turbocharged, straight-3 engine that was anticipated for use in the 2010 Nissan Micra,[1] but was ultimately dropped in favour of the HR10/12DE and still-simpler HD12DDR/DDT variants, dependent on vehicle and application.

HR12DDT/HRA2 (Renault H5Ft)

The HR12DDT is a 1.2 L (1,197 cc) all-aluminium direct injected and turbocharged straight-4 engine equipped with lifetime timing chain, DOHC and VVT, variable displacement oil pump, Stop-Start and regenerative braking. It produces 85 kW (114 hp; 116 PS) @ 4500 or 5000 rpm and 190 N⋅m (140 lb⋅ft) @ 2000 - 4000 rpm to 97 kW (130 hp; 132 PS) @ 5000 rpm and 205 N⋅m (151 lb⋅ft) @ 2000 - 3000 rpm depending on the application. Renault brands for these engines are TCe115, TCe120 and TCe130.

HR13DDT (Renault H5Ht)

The HR13DDT is a 1.3 L (1,332 cc) all-aluminium direct injected and turbocharged straight-4 engine equipped with lifetime timing chain, DOHC and VVT, variable displacement oil pump, Stop-Start, regenerative braking and Bore Spray Coating system (installed in Nissan GT-R models). It produces three choices: 85 kW (114 hp; 116 PS) @ 4500 rpm and 220 N⋅m (162 lb⋅ft) @ 1.500 - 3500 rpm, 103 kW (138 hp; 140 PS) @ 5000 rpm and 240 N⋅m (177 lb⋅ft) @ 1.600 - 3600 rpm, and 117 kW (157 hp; 159 PS) @ 5500 rpm and 270 N⋅m (199 lb⋅ft) @ 1800 - 3500 rpm depending on the application. Renault brands for these engines are TCe115, TCe140 and TCe160. This engine tests WLTP proof (Euro 6c).

The HR12DDR is a 1.2 L (1,198 cc) supercharged straight-3 engine, equipped with timing chain. It produces 72 kW (97 hp; 98 PS) and 143 N⋅m (105 lb⋅ft). Designed for small-car applications, this gasoline engine incorporates a variety of technologies to minimize CO
emissions while providing practical levels of power output.[2][3]

  • Direct Injection Gasoline (DIG)

The DE engine series include naturally aspirated engines.


The HR10DE is a 1.0 L (999 cc) straight-3 engine. Bore: 78 mm (3.07 in); Stroke 69.7 mm (2.74 in); Capacity: 1.0 L (999 cc); 12v DOHC. It produces 56.6 kW (77 PS; 76 hp) and 98 N⋅m (72 lb⋅ft). Flex-Fuel, gasoline (E22) or ethanol (E100).

  • Compression ratio of 11.2:1

The HR12DE is a 1.2 L (1,198 cc) straight-3 engine. It produces 80 hp (60 kW; 81 PS) and 110 N⋅m (81 lb⋅ft).[2]

The HR15DE is a 1.5 L (1,498 cc) straight-4 engine, output is 100 PS (74 kW; 99 hp) @ 6000 rpm and 134.4 N⋅m (99 lb⋅ft) @ 4000 rpm.

Bore: 78 mm (3.07 in); Stroke 78.4 mm (3.09 in); Capacity: 1.5 L (1,498 cc), 16 valve DOHC EFI with CVTC technology and is fitted to the following vehicles:

HR16DE (Renault H4M)

HR16DE installed in 2007 Micra C+C
HR16DE installed in 2007 Micra C+C

The HR16DE is a 1.6 L; 97.5 cu in (1,598 cc) straight-4 gasoline engine. It produces 105 to 119 PS (77 to 88 kW; 104 to 117 hp) and 158 N⋅m (117 lb⋅ft) torque @ 4000rpm.

DE engine updates (2006-)

Changes include:

  • neutral idle control achieved through the coordinated control of the engine in tandem with the XTRONIC CVT
  • introduction of alternator regenerative control mechanism
  • Reduction of engine friction by machining the cam shaft to a crowning mirror-like finish and application of a fluorine coating to the chain guide
  • Delayed valve closure timing of the intake, achieved through the increased conversion angle of C-VTC and superior timing management, thus reducing pumping loss when idling
  • Lower idling speed

The improved HR15DE engines were first used in Nissan Cube, Nissan Cube Cubic, Nissan Note, Nissan Tiida, Nissan Tiida Latio and Nissan Wingroad sold since December 25, 2006.[5][6]

Nissan HRA0 Engine (Renault H4Dt TCe)

The HRA0 is a 1.0 L (999 cc) dual direct injected, turbocharged, straight-3 engine It produces 74 kW (99 hp; 101 PS) @ 5000 rpm and 160 N⋅m (118 lb⋅ft) @ 2750 rpm
