Nippon Decimal Classification

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nippon Decimal Classification (NDC, also called the Nippon Decimal System) is a system of library classification developed for mainly Japanese-language books maintained and revised by the Japan Library Association since 1948. Originally developed in 1929 by Kiyoshi Mori, the 10th and latest edition of this system was published in 2014. The decimal notation system is similar to the Dewey Decimal System, and the order of main classes is inspired from the Cutter Expansive Classification. The system is based upon using a three digit number to classify subjects, where more digits can be added if necessary and a decimal point is used to separate the third and fourth digit. The first division level is called a class, the second level is called a division, and the third level is called a section. Each '1-9' digit is used to represent a specific category, with the digit '0' being used to represent general works.

Hi, my name is Colin MacLean. This is one of a series of short videos about using the library. This video is about how books are arranged on the bookshelves in the library using the Dewey Decimal Classification system. The Library uses the Dewey Decimal Classification system for the arrangement of books on the Library bookshelves. This system allocates numbers ranging from 000 to 999 to specific subject areas. A decimal point is the used to drill down to topics in more detail. This means that books on the same or similair subjects are located near to each other on the Library bookshelves. So that if you find a book that is of interest at one shelfmark, you will also find books on the same or similair topic on nearby shelves. Nursing and midwifery are classified with numbers beginning with '61', and these are found on Floor 4 of the Library. Each copy of a book has it's classification number printed on a label on the bottom edge or 'spine' of the book, facing out. This number is called the 'shelfmark'. The letters after the numbers are just the first 3 letters of the authors name or of the title, and these are used to help when filing the books so that copies of the same book can sit on the shelves together. This arrangement also means that books to do with subjects such as ethics psychology or sociology are on bookshelves located in aisles elsewhere in the Library, on Floor 3. The Library bookstacks may look like a maze, but they do have a structure. In the aisles, books are arranged in bays of usually six shelves high, each about a meter wide. To find a specific book, you may have to browse along each shelf and down each bay. The arrangement continues to the top of the next bay, then down and back up again... and so on to the end of the aisle. The bookstacks can be busy and sometimes get untidy, so that books may not be in the place they should be when you are looking for them, but Library staff will be happy to help you if you're having problems locating a book.
