History

Nickelodeon first debuted in Malta on November 15, 1998, followed by Romania on December 24, 1998, Hungary on January 13, 2000, and Ukraine on November 5, 2003. In 2004, a Russian broadcast of the channel launched in the rest of Eastern Europe. The channel later began programing in the Czech Republic and Slovakia on February 10, 2010.

In October 2011, Nickelodeon HD launched on satellite in the Czech Republic. Nickelodeon launched in Croatia, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina in November 2011, as well as in Serbia and Slovenia on April 23, 2013. The Serbian version of the channel was also made available to Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The channel launched in Bulgaria in November 2013.

On April 1, 2015, the channel began broadcasting programs in 16:9 widescreen.

Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania would follow in October 2017. In February 2018, the Nickelodeon HD channel was rebranded as Nicktoons (Nickelodeon for younger audiences) in Poland. Later, the channel would broadcast in Turkey starting in Summer 2018. The channel relaunched in Austria on October 1, 2021. The channel officially started airing in Kazakhstan on April 5, 2022, being the most recent launch of the channel.

On 1 June 2023, 1+1 Media Group and Paramount Global announced that Nickelodeon had become available for viewers to watch in Ukrainian, after a Ukrainian audio track was added to the Central and Eastern European feed.[1]

The channel rebranded to its current era on August 1, 2023, nearly 5 months after its rebrand in the U.S.
