Hey there Jenny! Word on the street is that you've got yourself a new job! Excited? You betcha. I start tomorrow. Well how would you like to see what you have to look forward to? Would I! Well, come on then! Let's take a tour of your working experience... Oh look Jenny, we're just in time... This is old man Miller's last day! Golly, he must be really excited about retiring... No Jenny, he's not retiring... but it's a lot cheaper to hire a young worker like you than to keep an old guy like him around. Oh... He's the reason you got hired. It's what we call "Restructuring!" Where are we now? This is the future Jenny... nine months from now. Gosh, I don't look very happy... Well that's because you just got moved to the night shift. Hey everybody, I want you to meet my sister's kid. Jenny, he's gonna be taking over your day shifts! But... And I'm gonna need you to work Saturdays. Wait! Why don't I say something? Oh you could, but I thought you said you needed this job. I do. Then it's probably better to just stay quiet and do as you're told. It's what we call "knowing your place!" But don't worry, it's not all bad. Look, you just got your pay cheque! I still don't seem happy. Well that's because you just saw that Billy there makes more than you for doing the same job. But that's not fair! Of course its not fair, but you're a woman. It's what we call "Gender Inequality!" But don't worry, you'll get used to double standards, rules that change on the whim of your boss, and all the other exciting aspects of the "Non-unionized" workplace! Isn't there anything I can do? No... not really. Well, you said, non-unionized... what if I join a union? Well, yes... if things like gender equality, pension plans, regulation of working hours, and job standards are something you are interested in... but you wouldn't be interested in any of those things... Wait! Where are you going? I'm going to find out about joining a union!

History

The national local was founded in 1958, but its roots extend back to the 1940s. Organizing workers at AP was the subject of a case before the U.S. Supreme Court in Associated Press v. Labor Board, 301 U.S. 103 (1937)[5] which held that the First Amendment did not give media employers immunity from labor laws. That case involved an editorial worker who edited and rewrote news copy.
