Assalamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakaatu Quran Weekly, This is your brother Omer Sulaiman and we continuing now with the Superstars Series. Now when we look into the Seerah of Prophet (S), there are two names that are often associated together and in fact you can make the argument that they are always associated together. Those are Talhah ibn Ubaidullah (R) and Az-Zubair ibn Awwam (R). Both of these Sahabah had a very special place with the Prophet (S). In fact the Prophet (S) said about Talhah and Az-Zubair that they are both my neighbors in Jannah. They are going to be my neighbors in Paradise. So lets take a quick look at the life of Talhah (R) and the special quality that we can take from his life. Talhah (R), he tells the story of his own Islam. He is from the same tribe as Abu-Bakr As-Siddiq (R), the tribe of Taym. He was a tradesman. So he says that he was in Syria when he saw that the Prophet (S) had left As-Shaam and a monk had informed Talhah (R) that the Prophet (S) was indeed a Messenger of Allah (SWT). So Talhah (R) made his way back to Makkah and he asked the people, "What happened while I was gone?" So they said, "Mohammad (S) has claimed Prophethood." So Talhah (R) went to his relative, Abu-Bakr As-Siddiq (R), and he said, "Have you heard about what Muhammad (S) is saying?" And he (Abu-Bakr As-Siddiq) said, "Yes, he is calling to the truth, and you should follow him also." So Talhah (R) said, "I became Muslim." Now Talhah (R) and Abu-Bakr (R) were high men in their society with Talhah (R) being younger; he was only eighteen years old. But both of them would have to be tortured and what the Quraish would do with the high people in society is that they wouldn't torture them out in public but they would assign them to their relatives. So the person that was in charge of both Abu-Bakr (R) and Talhah (R) was Nawfal ibn Khuwailid, the brother of Khadijah (R), who tied both Talhah (R) and Abu-Bakr (R) up and would torture them every single day. In fact Talhah and Abu-Bakr (R), may Allah be please with them, gained the nickname, al-Qarinayn, the two Qareens, the two close friends, those who were tied together because they were tied together so frequently whenever they would be tortured by Nawfal. Now if we look at their lives and if we look at the life of Talhah (R) in particular, the specific characteristic, the specific trait that always stands out is the trait of Ihsaan, pure excellence. Talhah (R) excelled in everything that he did. He was known for his generosity so much so that Saeed bin Zayd (R), one of the other ten promised paradise, said that, "I have travelled with Talhah (R) on journeys and I have never seen a person more generous than him in his food, in his water, and in his clothing." Talhah (R) was in fact given three nicknames by the Prophet (S) because of his frequent charity and because how he would always stand out and he would always be the one to excel. Rasulullah named him Talhatul-Thair, Talhatul-Juud, Talhatul-Fayyad, all three of them having similar meanings. Talhatul Thair -- Talhah the Excellent, Talhatul Juud -- Talhah the Benevolent, and Talhatul-Fayyad -- Talhah the one who is excessively generous. So Rasulullah recognized those special traits of Talhah (R) as did the Sahabahs, may Allah (SWT) be please with them all. The specific incident that you look at with Talhah (R) to truly understand his excellence and his Ihsaan and his always going over board and going a step forward to please Allah (SWT) was the Day of Uhud. The day the Prophet (S) was hurt, beaten, had the rings of his helmet driven into his cheeks, and had his front teeth knocked out. When Talhah (R) heard that the Prophet (S) was being attacked he ran to the Prophet (S) and defended the Prophet (S) so much so that Rasulullah (S) would later on say, "You should have seen me on the day of Uhud. On my right was Jibreel (A) and my left was Talhah (R)." And in fact Talhah (R), may Allah (SWT) be pleased with him, when he ran to the Prophet (S) when the Prophet (S) was being attacked, an arrow was shot at the Prophet (S) and Talhah (R) extended his hand and allowed the arrow to hit hand. Because of that, his hand became paralyzed. He then took his other arm and he put the Prophet (S) over his shoulder and he guarded the Prophet (S) and tried to escape that area where the Prophet (S) was being attacked. His daughter, she says that my father on that day suffered twenty-four wounds to his body. When Talhah (R) finally took the Prophet (S) to safety, he laid the Prophet (S) down and then he fell unconscious because of all of the blood that was coming from him. Abu-Bakr and Sa'ad, may Allah (SWT) be pleased with them, said we ran to the Prophet (S) and the Prophet (S) directed us to go to Talhah (R). The Prophet (S) was there and he was just staring at Talhah (R). He was just admiring the efforts that Talhah (R) put in and the Prophet (S) said something very special about Talhah (R). He said right then and there, "Whoever wants to see a martyr, a walking and living martyr walking on his two feet, then let him look at Talhah (R) and admire him." So Subhanallah, can you imagine that he already had those nicknames and he also now gains the nickname of the Walking Shaheed, the Living Martyr. And Abu-Bakr (R) in fact, when he used to look at the Day of Uhud and reflect on the Day of Uhud, he said the Day of Uhud is the Day of Talhah (R) because of how special the sacrifice of Talhah (R) was that day. So Talhah (R), like the others, he served with the Prophet (S) in every battle except for Badr because he was with Saeed ibn Zayd (R) scouting in the area of As-Shaam when the Battle of Badr took place and by the time they got back, the battle had already finished. Talhah (R) had asked the Prophet (S), "Do I have my reward Oh Rasullullah?" And the Prophet (S) said, "You have your reward." Talhah (R) wasn't necessarily thinking of the spoils of war, because the Prophet (S) mentioned the spoils of war there. Talhah (R) was a person of Ihsaan. He was thinking about something totally different. He said, "And my reward in the Akhirah Oh Prophet of Allah?" And the Prophet (S) said, "And you have your Ajr (reward)." So that shows you the mentality of Talhah (R). He wasn't just concerned about the spoils, he was concerned about he pleasure of Allah (SWT). So we can look back at the Day of Uhud, the day that many people fled from the side of the Prophet (S), and we know that that is the day of Talhah (R) because he was standing their with the Prophet (S), shielding the Prophet (S). This was Talhah (R) every time Rasullullah (S) made a call for anything. Talhah (R) was the first one to always volunteer himself, whether it was sadaqah (charity), whether it was his own life, or whatever it may have been, Talhah (R) was always the first one to come forward to strive in the cause of Allah (SWT). Unfortunately towards the end of his life, Talhah (R) witnessed the murder of Uthman (R). This murder hurt him so much because Talhah (R) loved Uthman (R). He sent his own son, Muhammad, to stand at the door of Uthman (R) whenever the house of Uthman (R) was under siege. So whenever Uthman (R) was assassinated, Talhah (R) was from the army of Aisha (R) who was demanding that the killers of Uthman (R) be pursued. Whenever Aisha (R), Talhah (R), and Az-Zubair, may Allah be pleased with all of them, came to meet with Ali (R) and asked Ali (R) to pursue the killers of Uthman (R), they came to an agreement amongst each other. As we know Abdullah ibn Sabbah, had both the camp of Aisha (R) and the camp of Ali (R) attacked, and because of that a battle occurred between the army of Aisha (R) and the army of Ali (R), may Allah be pleased with both of them. Both of them were not intending to hurt the other or having this battle, but both thinking that they were attacked. Talhah (R) was only there because of his love for Uthman (R). In fact, this was his Ihsaan. He made the dua, "O Allah take from me for Uthman until you are pleased." Talhah (R) was murdered and killed on that day, and Ali (R) came to Talhah (R), he wiped his face and started to cry, and he kissed him on the forehead. He said, "I ask Allah (SWT) to make you and I amongst those who Allah (SWT) says, وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِي صُدُورِهِم مِّنْ غِلٍّ إِخْوَانًا عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مُّتَقَابِلِينَ (WanazaAAna ma fee sudoorihimmin ghillin ikhwanan AAala sururin mutaqabileen) (15:47) 'And we have taken from their hearts all forms of grudges, everything that they had against each other, and We made them brothers on throwns, on high couches staring at one another in Al-Jannah' (15:47)" So this was Talhah (R), the person who always went the extra step, who always wanted to make sure he did everything with Ihsaan. So I ask you, whenever you do something, whenever you give sadaqah, whenever you do anything for the cause of Allah (SWT), how much are you really putting into it? How much Ihsaan is there in it? How much excellence is there in it? I ask Allah (SWT) to allow us to be joined with Talhah (R) after all he is a neighbor of Prophet (S) in Jannatul-Firdous. So we ask Allah (SWT) to allow us to be their neighbors in Jannutul-Firdous. Allahuma Ameen. I will see you next week inshallah for the Superstars Series. Jazakullahu Khairun. Assalamu Alaykum
