The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS; Malay: Kementerian Kebudayaan, Belia dan Sukan, KKBS) is a ministry in the Government of Brunei responsible for the policies and development of the national culture, youth and sports in Brunei. The current minister is Aminuddin Ihsan bin Abidin and has held office since January 2018.[1] The ministry was established in 1984.[2]

Organisation

The following departments are under the responsibility of the ministry:

  • Brunei History Centre (Pusat Sejarah Brunei) — responsible for the official research and dissemination on the history of Brunei
  • Museums Department (Jabatan Muzium-Muzium) – manages all public museums such as the Brunei Museum, Malay Technology Museum and Royal Regalia Museum, as well as places of heritage and archaeological sites
  • Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Brunei (literally 'Brunei Language and Literature Bureau') — regulates the public use of Malay language in Brunei, also manages all public libraries
  • Youth and Sports Department (Jabatan Belia dan Sukan) — oversees the development of national youth and sports, national athletes and public sports facilities
  • Community Development Department (Jabatan Pembangunan Masyarakat, abbreviated as JAPEM) — mainly manages the provision of welfare to the disabled, the needy and orphans

The ministry also manages the following institutions:

  • National Archives (Arkib Negara) — the national archives of Brunei
  • Youth Development Centre (Pusat Pembangunan Belia) — a post-secondary institution providing basic vocational training skills

The National Service Programme (Program Khidmat Bakti Negara, PKBN) is managed by the ministry and it is the voluntary military national service of Brunei.

The Sports School (Sekolah Sukan) was formerly under the responsibility of the ministry but has since been transferred to the Ministry of Education under the Department of Schools.[3] It is the sole sports school in the country.

Budget

The allocated budget for the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports for the current fiscal year 2019-20 is B$93 million (US$68 million as of July 2019),[4] a 22.8 percent increase from the previous year.[5]
