Mary Carruthers

Mary J. Carruthers (born January 15, 1941)[1] is the Erich Maria Remarque Professor of Literature and Professor of English, emerita, at New York University. She also teaches at New York University Abu Dhabi.[2] She is formerly a professor at Case Western Reserve University and the University of Illinois.

She has written widely on medieval literature and rhetoric, memory and mnemonic techniques, and the history of spirituality.

She holds a Ph.D. in English from Yale University (1965), and a B.A. in English from Wellesley College (1961).

She was elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2020.[3]

Carruthers was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 2022.[4]
