Malvern Hall was just a girls' grammar school in those days and the lake that is now in the wildlife bit in Brueton Park was in the grounds of Malvern Hall because when they used to leave school in the sixth form they used to throw their hats in there They were straw boaters and the original building was the whole school and at the gates there were two niches - one either side of the gate, that had statues in and Miss Deebank told us one day that when she was a little girl her father had walked from Birmingham to Solihull for a job and he got a job as a gardener at Malvern Hall and she used to be frightened to go through the gates in the late afternoon because she thought they'd turn into real people and come after her Miss Deebank was also very helpful to my daughter when she was at school because if you wanted to know anything about old Solihull, you went and asked her and she quite often would take a picture off the wall and find things in the back of the picture that told you what went on in Solihull and that the children used to run behind the water cart and pull the bung out and let the water out so children were just as bad then as they are now, according to her! But she was a real nice lady.
