Mahajan is an Indian surname and caste which belongs to the Hindu Community. It signifies the profession of a moneylender, merchants, bankers and administrators.[1]

The word Mahajan generally is referred to a trader and the last name may be found in that caste.[2][3]

There is a branch of Deshastha Brahmins, a Hindu Brahmin subcaste, with the last name of Mahajan, which hails from the northern part of Karnataka, a state in India.
